RALEIGH, N.C. - Sleeping through a fire alarm proved costly for two students at Saint Augustine's College in Raleigh.

Neither Whitney Ceaser nor Nakisha Midder was hurt. For sleeping through the alarm, the school fined each of them 150 dollars, something they say represents what they call a "fee-to-death" culture at the historically black college in east Raleigh.

Midder says she and her classmate are being charged for sleeping too hard.

School officials say the college will fine late fire alarm response only after the dorm has been cleared, students are noticed missing and officials have to re-search the dorm.

The students said they were not informed of the policy until after the January 31st incident. The school's Web site spells out fines for pulling fire alarms or using extinguishers without cause.

Boston College hits students with a 100-dollar fine or community restitution on the first offense of ignoring an alarm.
