    Default Beekeeping

Do we have any members that keep bees? I got into beekeeping last year and I've had a lot of fun learning from the bees. Hopefully I will get to harvest some honey this year. I plan to get into queen (rearing) grafting very soon.

We cut this one out of a house yesterday.

My buddy at work had gotten into it big time. I think he has like 100+ hives. I know more about bees than I thought I ever would just from hearing him talk.

All of these pics here looks slammed full of healthy bees.

I kept a couple of hives for about 10 years and have temporarily given up. Both hives swarmed on me and never recovered after that. Then, the wax worms moved in before I got the frames put away.

I may be starting to become allergic to them as well. It seems like every time I get popped, I swell up more than the last time. I need to get checked before I pick it up again.

Couple queen cups in one of those pictures, they may have been prepping to swarm.

Awesome. I love bees. My industry relies on them.

My commercial pollinator group have made enough money on bees to buy a Macadamia nut ranch on Kona. They work hard and travel extensively in season but have been rewarded. Their route sprawls from Montana west to Washington and South to California.

I love watching documentaries on bees, beekeeping, and especially their communication methods. However, I have no desire to keep them, but I am forever grateful for those who do. It does not take much understanding to realize how much we depend on those guys. I literally rewatched a ten-minute portion of one doc as it related to how the scouts signal the coordinates for the others. Mindblowing, truly fantastic design. MG

Since you are in the Pee Dee, do you bother to bear proof your hives?

    Hitting the road.

The bee pic was from the removal from the left apex. They came back and set up residence in the right soffit.

    And there's the kicker...

Ahhh that’s a bit beyond my capability. After you do get those removed, consider hanging a swarm trap in your yard to coax them o move into a trap instead of your house.

The waggle dance! They return to the hive, wiggle, move directions, wiggles again, repeats until they draw a map of exactly where the food is. Each wiggle is the distance length they need to travel in that direction. If the food source is really good, they dance even more thank usual.

How long does it take from the start of the hive till you get honey?
    Yup, he's crazy...

It really takes a year. The hive needs enough honey to survive the winter. Certain breeds do better with managing their food stores over the winter. Feeding the hives is required at times throughout the year too depending on what's available inside the box. Inspections help to determine what they need throughout the year.

What exactly do they eat? I thought they ate pollen? Gosh I need to do some bee research.

    Very interesting thread for sure.
