I have been asked to get your opinion on this topic. It is not my idea nor have I formed an opinion.

We all know mud motors are loud and contribute to a waterfowl disturbance problem.

This question goes a step further. Apparently there is a trend to install aftermarket "performance mufflers" that have a small improvement in horsepower but a large increase in engine noise. Some have removable baffles that are removed to call attention to the boater.

The poll question is: Should there be a state wide ban on the use of these loud mufflers during duck season?

They also have aftermarket performance mufflers to quiet them down, I own one. Its a noticeable difference, when I got my new motor the first thing that hit me was I have got to get this muffler switched out ASAP.

Good on you. A real issue would be expecting law enforcement to recognize louder or softer because of the part change.

I have a 13hp long tail with a header. Welded on a muffler from a 500cc ninja motor cycle. So much quieter.

This. There is no place for all that noise during times when migratory birds are present.

The only ban on airboats is from upper santee river to 95 on marion, you can run them anywhere else during the season besides below the salt/freshwater line.

With the right muffler it’s no different than a 4 wheeler.

Back in the 70's, 80's and even the first half of the 90's, you didn't see most ducks jumping several hundred yards away due to an outboard going by. You could still finish ducks with an outboard idling by at 300 yards. Now, even if it's a half mile away and the mud motor is at the landing, you can give up on working ducks. You see ducks jumping on the far side of a lake if a mm is running. I've often seen mallards jumping out the timber from a mm just running up a river. Outboards rarely cause that. All my hunting is on public land so it may be different on private.

Why aren't 4 wheelers allowed on State and Federal lands in SC for deer and turkey hunting? What would be the impact on public deer and turkey hunting be if 4 wheelers were allowed 24/7?

What invention since 2003 has given public duck hunters the ease of operation of an outboard and the access to remote areas in the marsh similar to an airboat?

I think he’s saying you can’t make an air boat quieter but you can make a mud boat quieter. Never got anything from this stating it’s a trend?
