    Default Youth Shotguns

My eldest boy has taken interest in dove and duck hunting. He is wanting to start trying to shoot some. I bought him a Weatherby SA-08 compact as it fit him well but that dang thing kicks like a mule. I have my wife a Mossberg SA-20 that shoots really nice but finding a compact stock seems to be like a needle in a hay stack. Looking for opinions on a good gun for him to get started with and will not pound him, making him recoil sensitive. My boy is 9 to be 10 in February and is a little larger than average in size. Any help is appreciated.

Tough going for a little one and guns that fit. Gas is a must and I’d recommend a Beretta if at all possible.

Appreciate it Ricky. Been looking at Berettas but not seen many in compact. Will have to do some deeper digging.

If you can find one a A400 Lite 20 is a really good one.

Franchi affinity 3 compact is what my son moved to after a few cut off single shots. Stock has LOP spacers to help as they grow.

Served him well until he moved up.

They are pretty tough to find but I started on a Remington 1100 Lt 20 with a straight English style stock. Fit my smaller hands at the time and shot fairly softly. The one downside to anything in the 1100/1187 family is the weight. Light they are not

First determine his (they) eye dominance. If he (they) are left eye dominant teach them to shoot left handed. I used a cut off Browning Micro BPS 20 ga. It is an ambidextrous gun.

You can buy the Mossberg SA-20 in a compact.

I bought a youth 1100 from bownut and it’s been great. 2 nephews and my sister has shot it and hasn’t even made it to my boy that I bought it for yet and haven’t had a single problem.

X2. Pricey but great for kids. Not just shorter but has smaller forearm for small hands.

Don’t start a kid on an inertia gun.

Why? We didn't even get to learn on youth guns and we turned out fine.

Both my children started with an 870 Express Youth 20 gauge. No regrets. We moved to a Beretta a few years after that.

A mossberg sa-28 is a fine starter gun.

Find me one or 3. Some idiot at Mossberg thought it would be a good idea to stop making them.

My 11 year old shoots a Franchi Affinity compact.

My older son is now 13 and he has a Benelli Montefeltro (sp?) that we bought at Barrons in Columbia. The benelli model/package came with two stocks, so as he grows we can switch it out... or as he gets older and wants to move to a 12 gauge, i will gladly take the montefeltro back from him. Really nice gun.

The Franchi has worked out well too.

Both have shot doves, ducks and turkeys with their respective guns and neither kicks too hard.

Bought my daughter the 20 gauge Weatherby youth SA-08, about 10 years ago. She's 17 now and still loves that gun. It's her exclusive turkey killer.
