    Default Foundering

8 pt buck with jacked up hooves. Might have to make a gun rack out of these legs. Crazy looking. I've seen it on farm animals but this was a first for me with deer.

I have never seen that on a deer that was not in a pen. I bet he didn’t have any trouble getting around though.

I have heard that is or can signify an EHD survivor.

But Charles Ruth says S.C. hasn’t had a confirmed
case of EHD so who knows

That’s incorrect. He’s said that SC hasn’t had a confirmed case of CWD. According to a conversation I had with him a few weeks ago, EHD is fairly common in SC.

You’re right, he said EHD didn’t affect deer in SC. That they were inoculated. Which still seems far fetched but idk

Maybe. What’s he’s saying makes sense. No different than Indians getting slaughtered by European diseases.

Ruth told me that EHD is carried and transmitted by midges (sand gnats, no see ums). Said it’s not lethal the majority of the time but occasionally is fatal especially if a deer has other health issues. They exhibit many of the same symptoms as a deer w/ CWD. Many times they are found dead in or around water.

I was reading up on foundering and it can be diet related. High carb, corn, deer chow related.

i was told those "elven hooves" meant a systemic disease. this was years ago when I wasnt worried about the chinese tracking me. Admittedly, I havent researched it in a while....

I tend to think it was something along the lines of a systemic disease that caused foundering. I don't see a heavy corn diet where I was hunting, plenty of natural food around. Meat looks great, I'll process it, freeze it and eat it like the rest of the deer I kill

Corn can cause a horse to founder but a horse doesn't have a split hoof.
And if corn caused it every deer in South Carolina would have this
