A 30-06 gives you more bullet options. You can hunt almost any animal in the world.

A 308 is the same bullet options with less powder.

I’ve killed deer with everything from a .222 to .338 Win Mag. Accuracy trumps everything else. If you can hit the right spot(s) = dead deer. Something you’re comfortable shooting, familiar with and confident in is the most important factor. For SC deer a 7mm08 or .308 is about perfect, .243 and 6.5CM are as well. Medium weight to heavier bullets for me in the cartridge are preferred. Glass, but the best you can afford without all the bells and whistles, you don’t need ranging reticles, zero stop, 60 mil of elevation and wind age or 34mm tubes. Illumination is good but IMO I only want the center point illuminated, not the entire reticle and I want it as dim as possible in low light.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

You aren't pigment diluted enough for a 6.5 CM unless you can get some dreds in a man bun.

Get something that is A) pleasant to shoot (low recoil) B) is a common available caliber from multiple gun mfgs (choices) and C) common enough caliber ammo is easy to find.

    .308, .25-06, 7mm-08.

Tikka makes a nice rifle and is in a class I call affordable. I love the one my wife has.

Throw a Vortex on it and go slay.

Buy the one that Bw35 has and it will do anything you want it to do and it's priced right.

I’d have to side with 2th. 270win Remington 700 and a Leupold within your budget. 130gr Nosler ballistic tips. Will kill anything in SC or the southeast.

I haven’t personally looked through all the higher end scopes but it’s hard to beat the eye relief in a Leupold

2th's recommendation is a good one. That's also a good long range weapon.

I have vxiiis on a couple of rifles, they're fine for killing deer. I'm not shooting paper. I like my deer rifles to look pretty just like my wing shooting shotguns. I still shoot core lokts, the main couple of deer rifles I grab are 30-06s.

Get a common caliber that is easy to find ammo for locally. A halfway decent Leupold will do everything you need.

Remington model 700 .270 with wood grain stock and blued barrel (because it's classic) paired with 130 grain core-lokt's and a 50 mm Bushnell Elite scope. Can't go wrong.
