I always heard an old fuel burning lantern is the ticket. I have never used one for tracking, but it makes sense; at a campsite, a lantern will make it seem like it’s daytime without constantly blinding you if you glance toward it…I may be hitting Amazon up this evening.

The few times I’ve had to track after dark I found that a blue light can be very effective. Couple that with a bright white light for looking into the shadows and I’ve never had to use a dog, although I certainly would if needed. Then I changed from 30-06 Core-Lokt bullets to 7mm-08 Ballistic Silvertips and my deer stopped running away.

If you get a Coleman lantern, get your fingerprints recorded first so you'll have a record of what they're supposed to look like. That innocuous little roof over the mantles doesn't glow red even when it's is over 4000 degrees. I can warn you like my dad warned me but you won't remember until you've proved it for yourself. You'll see.

i knew a guy back in the day that would take a pie plate and put it over the top bolt to reflect the light down and keep it out your eyes. PIA to carry it around
