    Default Wood Stock Rifle

Figured I'd bring up an old topic. I've been thinking about a new deer rifle and don't really want to go down the MPR and AR trail. I've got the AR covered now thanks to Steelin. I went down a rabbit hole last night and this morning looking at old threads on here about wood stock rifles and it seemed to be that either the Winchester Model 70 Featherweight or Sako 85 got about the most positive past reviews on here. Is that still the case?

Yes. A Model 70 Super Grade is one to add to the list of options along with original M700 Mountain Rifles. What caliber?

Caliber I am torn with. Thought about 25-06 cause I love my 30. Also thinking about a short action though. Maybe a 7-08 or something along those lines. Not sure I will jump on the 6.5 bandwagon just yet but not opposed for the right deal as well

Wood, composite, etc. Doesn't matter anyway if you're the one shooting it

the likes and dislikes of the scducks faithful is anything but consistent.
I've tried to do exactly the opposite of everything on here and it seems to be a smart choice.

Wood if you like the looks and take care of things. If it is just a tool to be used, then plastic.

You have the new rifle recommendations covered, but if you just want something different there are some great older rifles on the web that are used, but still in great condition. The older guns from the 70s,80s,90s, had the best blueing and wood stocks. One of my favorites is a Wingmaster from the 70s I got from a member on here and a Browning Model 1895 in 30-06 from the 80s, on another site, that looked practically brand new. A Model Seven in 7mm-08 would be my pick. It was my first rifle as a kid, but it was a gun that got passed through the family, and I need to get one for when my girls get old enough to get their first.

It's been pillar bedded, new crown, and I installed a Timney. Sumbitch will shoot.

Sako 85 Bavarian or Bavarian Carbine if you want good wood. I have a Model 70 Supergrade in '06 that was my Dad's rifle, I'll take the Sako any day of the week over it, just feels better. Cooper makes some dang fine wood stock guns too. The Sako hunter and Tikka T3 wood stocks leave a lot to be desired as far as a nice chunk of wood goes, normally very bland with no figure, burling or patina. Had a few A-Bolts with some beautiful wood on them, they just shot like crap.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

    That's not a pistol. That's a revolver.

They just started making the model 700 Remington again in wood stock. Tried and true!

I'm going to post a Sako 85 S Finnlight on the trading post in a few days. I put a wood stock on it because the crappy soft touch stock went all sticky.
