In all honesty, it will be aimed at deer or backyard paper more than it would a long distance range. I'm not too concerned with weight, as I don't hike any crazy terrain/distance to reach a stand.

Toughness is nice, but I'd assume most "nice" scopes are pretty tough. Granted, it'd be a range toy and deer gun. It would only get a few bumps (and hopefully never dropped).




I'd sacrifice some distance for light gathering. I like being able to see those smart critters when they approach the feeder when they think it's dark.

The Leupold vx5hd 3-15x56 fits that bill. There are several people on here that own them and can attest to them. There has been a lot of shit spewed on this thread from people who haven’t spent much time behind quality optics but have read about them. I see 3-4 people on this thread who have. Most of us have put them through more in a weekend than the average deer hunter will his whole life. I know at one point FLS and myself were putting 2-300 rounds down range a week before the weekend then another 250-300 at a match that weekend. SW338 is using all his scopes are full auto and other rifles we can’t even afford to google. When you hear about how great a warranty is, it usually means a lot of people have used that warranty. I’d rather not even hear about a warranty vs how good one is. There is no way a blackhound optic is even in the same category as some of the above mentioned and you aren’t seeing an hour past sunset with it. If you want a $300 optic then SWFA fixed 6 or 10 is the only answer.

I appreciate the kind words, but I own or have looked through everything mentioned on here.
There are grades in my opinion tiers if you will.

NF is a specialty scope, its higher end than your low end stuff (and there are different qualities of NF), but not quite up once you get into the S&B, Swartz, Kahles, older US Optics, Lieca, then you get into the big leagues from there, and yes if you can afford . I personally do not care for Zeiss at all. As far as ruggedness, NF are tough. I've got a hand full of them, one time just for fun I was with a rep we took a demo zeroed it in had quick release rings. We took the scope off nailed a 16 pin nail into a 2x4 put it back on the gun and it held zero. My biggest complaint with NF is tracking.

If you were in the 6x compact the Elcan DR is one bad piece of glass. Durable as hell, it will stand up to a SCAR. SCAR 17s are were optics go to die.

If you want more light gathering you're gonna want 56mm, 34 tube.

I can write an entire dissertation about how much light your eye can take in under low light conditions, but I dont want to bore everyone. But you're gonna end up with the 56 turned down to about 6.5 to get the most low light your eye can take in at dark. And pro tip cover your head and the scope with a shirt, towel, so only light is coming through the actual tube.
the Tangents, Zero compromises, the glass and tracking is unreal, but you are getting into 4/5k glass.

I'm a solid fan of the Leupold VX-5HD series for putting meat on the table, and the Leupold Mk 5 series for longer range work. What is missing from the Leupold lineup is a good lower-range (2x-10x) DMR scope on the lines of the Mk 5. Everybody wants to watch the lunar landings through their scopes. I'd love an alternative in the lower- to mid-price point in that power range than just the Vortex PST Gen II

There aren’t very many good “crossover” scopes. A good long range reticles will be tough to see in low light without illumination. But when it gets real dark the illumination will make your target difficult to see. First focal doesn’t allow as much light as a second. Every lens it passes through degrades the amount you get.

This scope will do everything you’re wanting to do without breaking the bank. Trijicons are tough, usually track accurately, has a good reticle, decent glass, illumination, and 15x will take you out as far as you want to shoot. You don’t need first focal for what you are wanting to do.
