    Default Fall gardens

    what do you plant?
    when do you plant it?

i have a sort-of makeshift greenhouse I used for some summer vegetables this year. I am willing to start some fall stuff from seed if timing is right.

I just want to use the available space instead of just waiting for next spring.

    Discuss.

I threw some different weird peas out last year after some of my stuff was done. I was able to pick some, it was pretty cool for snacks when I went out to walk around. I've got a few tomatoes that hopefully will be chugging along. Took most everything out except for some herbs junk.

Kale, lettuce, arugula, broccoli, red cabbage. Got all my seeds started and they're starting to sprout.

I've got broccoli, Brussels, and collards up in a bed that gets filtered light in the afternoon. Need to start some lettuce soon.

You can. I always plant seeds mid August for the Fall garden and the timing works well. By the time it cools down enough that the Summer plants aren't doing much, the seedlings have grown large enough that they're ready for easy transplant into the ground. The only seeds I put in the ground right now are arugula because that's all the available space I have at the moment.

The rest is taken up by peppers, eggplant, okra, and tomatoes.

Collards, broccoli and lettuces. I usually plant early September, after the real hot days are past.

As far as I know you're only good at growing tomatoes so I'll only listen to you for Summer garden prep

Just got through planting beets and collards. I've never planted collards from seed but giving it a try this year. Turnips , mustard, kale and broccoli to follow real soon.

Not too late, but it's not early to be getting everything mentioned here started. I started a second round of tomato seeds mid June, and they are really hitting their stride. Once it gets cool enough for them to set fruit, I'll be overwhelmed with Cherokee Purples again. Already a few growing.

You don't really need a greenhouse to get seeds started right now, 2th. It's plenty warm to start them outside in the shade. My arugula, brussels, collards, and broccoli popped up in the trays in a day or two. I'm going to start some lettuce inside, it doesn't like germinating in 100 degrees too much.

    K,

Mid August to mid September is usually the window. Depends on if we're doing seed or transplants. We pulled out a raised bed that we'd grown lettuce in this spring/summer, and decided to plant it, it gets less direct afternoon sun so the lettuces seem to last a little longer into the summer than in the open garden. Planted a little earlier than normal, and this heat is not good, but we're putting the water to it and the plants look okay. We did pick varieties that were more heat tolerant on the greens and broccoli, since it was early.

Also, this little gadget comes in handy when you're trying to figure out planting dates, especially when trying to grow new things.
