Pretty good presentation and I learned a lot from some of the questions and ideas from the audience. There were some very well informed people there.

The meeting after the meeting and Ruby Tuesdays was pretty dang good too. Got to meet some new folks and see some others that I haven't seen in 6 or 7 years.

For those that attended, what was your biggest takeaway from either DNR's representatives or the audience?

I attended the Orangeburg and the Hardeeville meetings and have been following this information for quite some time. I will say, it is very difficult for any educated person to argue against a Statewide April 10th season start date.
The Harvest data coupled with research data over the last decade is very strong.

For those unable to attend any of the meetings, Jay should have a PowerPoint presentation available online that will be available sometime next week. There is a lot of great information in this presentation.

Agreed. The best thing we could do is push the start date back. However, I am inclined to believe it should be pushed back further. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the peak incubation date is April 9th, do the data form a bell curve?

If so, we have to assume that there is still a lot of incubation happening on April 10th and however many days afterwards that the data show.

So if we open the season April 10th we'd have a massive amount of pressure very near the peak. I think it's the right approach but if the point is to avoid disrupting nesting, it might be good to push it back a bit past your proposed date. Maybe April 15th?

I haven't seen the data of what % occurs before and after that peak date and for how many days. Do you have that information? Hopefully it'll be shown at the Greenville meeting. I'll be there.

I hope that the May heat, humidity, and mosquitos make it so uncomfortable that many folks just stay home.

Yes I've mentioned that as well. I'm certain that a later start date will reduce some pressure because of the weather.

Why do you think we have so many OOS hunters coming here to hunt turkeys? You think it's because of the fantastic turkey hunting we're known for? LOL, yea right. It's because our season opens in March in the lowcountry.

That's 2+ weeks before pretty much every state except Florida.

If I understood the data they presented last night a 4/9-4/12 start date would allow time for most of the breeding to take place before hunting pressure hit. Apparently there is about a week there where most of the breeding takes place just before that time frame.

Calibouge could probably explain it a lot better.

Moving the opener dates should definitely help.
Gobblers should be harder to call as breeding winds down.

The afternoon ambushers will get their share. I wish they would have addressed that.

Sounds like we're going to mirror North Carolina's season.

    What's an "afternoon ambusher"?

Most of the turkeys I've killed have been in the afternoon vs morning. And every one of them came in gobbling and excited. Do I meet your standards?

What about all the Gobblers I have watched breeding hens in February and early March?? They must not have had a calendar. Or Turkey biology changed and I missed the memo.

Noon cutoff time for the first ten days or for the entire season was one of the things discussed

The overwhelming majority of the vocal participants were for the later start date. The only person objecting stated his reason as it was to hot and to many bugs and snakes for him to take his wife hunting

That's nothing more than DNR's F U to us for getting Sunday hunting on public land passed. They're so mad that now we get to utilize most of our public land the way almost every state in America does.
