with a deformed leg, Sugar Duck is pampered and fed three meals a day.

SAVANNAH BLUFF LANDING | A Graco playpen is being explored by an adorable occupant longing for attention and needing a bathroom break.

The adults in the sunroom notice, and the elderst of the two springs to her feet, walks over to the playpen and scoops up the restless one.

No, it isn't a terrible-two's toddler. It is a duck named Sugar Duck, a pet with prime perks that would make dogs and cats the world over jealous

    - thanks to Mary A. Marshall and her daughter, Sally Ingram.

They love Sugar Duck, pamper her and ensure that her life on Earth is peaceful, happy and drama-free.

    No ruffled feathers here.

What Sugar Duck wants, Sugar Duck gets.

    Plenty of sleep.

"She takes a nap with Mama," said Ingram as she watched her mama cuddle the crippled duck they adopted April 16, 1995, the day she hatched.

"When Mama lies down at 3 p.m., Sugar Duck lies down then, too."

    Lots of quality time.

The mallard and Marshall also spend time together as coach potatoes while listening to Don Luehrs give the latest weather dish for WBTW-Channel 13.

"She doesn't care too much about the other weatherman, but she loves Don Luehrs," Ingram said. "Mama will take her in her arms and let her watch television with her."

On Sunday mornings, Marshall and Sugar Duck will sit down and listen to their favorite preacher deliver a sermon.

"I'll say, 'The [Baptist] preacher is coming on now. Are you going to listen to the service?' And Sugar Duck will sit still and listen to all of it," said Marshall before kissing Sugar Duck on the crown of her head.

When Sugar Duck was fighting her way out of her shell, it was Ingram who helped her get out. Sugar Duck, along with a brother who later broke his neck and died, was abandoned by her mother after hatching late.

Ingram attempted to reunite Sugar Duck with her mama, but her efforts failed, and the duck has been a part of the family ever since.

"Mama will hold Sugar Duck as much as she can," Ingram said. "And I say, 'Mama, why don't you leave that duck alone?' I guess that's why Sugar Duck bites me so bad - because I don't have time to play with her, walk her around and take her outside."

Time outside, however, is limited for Sugar Duck because Ingram and Marshall fear predators will kill her.

Dogs, cats and other nimble creatures are never too far away.

"We don't want to risk dogs or any other animal getting her," Ingram said.

That's why Sugar Duck spends most of her time in the sunroom named after her - Sugar Duck Tower - when she isn't being spoiled by Marshall.

Yet, Ingram is just as attentive to Sugar Duck in her own way.

She is the one who prepares Sugar Duck's daily diet of finely chopped romaine lettuce, cooked broccoli, crumbled bread with a smidgen of calcium and a combination of water and grit to help Sugar Duck digest the food.

"Taking care of the duck takes up half of the day," Ingram said.

Ingram is the one in charge of washing Sugar Duck and tending to other areas of hygiene, although she and her mama both clean up after Sugar Duck.

"We can tell when Sugar Duck has to go because she will wiggle around and look at you," Ingram said.

The duck certainly does give Ingram and Marshall eye-to-eye contact, especially when either of them is talking to her.

Even if preening, Sugar Duck will stop and listen to see what her mamas have to say.

"She is not a duck anymore," Ingram said. "She thinks she's human."

Marshall agreed with a soft nod of her head.

"She acts like a child," she said. "She is our child, and I call myself 'Mama' when I'm talking to her. But I don't know what Sugar Duck calls me behind my back - she probably calls me 'Old Woman.'"
