Default Dog Kennels Do’s and Dont’s

For those of ya’ll that have a kennel set-up for multiple dogs. What are a list of things you would or wouldn’t incorporate into them again?

Concrete, covered, nearby spigot and lights are obvious needs

I was actually considering forming a sloped trough in the concrete directly behind the kennels to push the waste into and then hose out the trough. Have it dump into a hole and keep some lime there to help neutralize the odor and break it down quickly.

I prefer above ground kennels. 4x8 with house built so they can stand on top of. I use galvanized grating in bottom. Chain link on sides.

If you do concrete add atleast 2 blocks high around perimeter and mount fencing on top so males are pissing on cinder block instead of railing or wire. Trough seems to be a love or hate no in between

Light broom finish. Slick finish is nice for cleaning but you’ll bust your butt walking on it when wet.

I liked a “ common area”. Pretty much a pen before you get to the multiple pens. I prefer a slick finish on concrete, and yes you will bust your ass.
    Pressure washer is nice.
Build kennel on top of the concrete ( no posts in the ground). Concrete pad could be used for something else later.

Seems obvious but I have seen it. Design the pens to have the box opposite of where you wash down.
I preferred half the pen to have a roof / cover.

i have a 15 * 75 slab with @1inch of slope on a brushed concrete finish. no fiber!!
I didn’t pour a trough on the back to wash poop down hill but i will add soon. I have a ditch that i spray out about 1 time
on top i build a metal roof sloped so the rain washed the poop out the trough.
kennels are 5 by 10 with the 55 gallon barrel hung from the rafters on a chain so i can clean under it closest to the door and facing away so i can wash out and not spray into the dog kennels.
use wysiwash once a week, pressure wash about 4 times a year.

Also equipped with low voltage lights, water, and Mistaway Misting system so there ain’t Ain’t no flies on Leeroy!
i got way too many dogs right now, if anyone wants a Started English Pointer now is the time to call. They get expensive in november.

Pour slab with fall to the back side, build roof, then buy these and slap them up. https://k9-kennelstore.com/multiple-...s.html?cat=378

I have a ditch on the back side, every year I'll shovel it out and throw it in the woods when it gets loaded up. You'll be surprised how much it'll break down on it's own. Smell isn't a problem at least for me. I feed Pro Plan performance if that makes a difference or not. Leaves are the biggest problem.

I wish I had a trough. Welded wire kennels are worth it over chain link in my opinion.

if you don’t have a trough you can do like the dog trainers and pick up
the poop and put it in an empty dog food bag and take to the dump….

Nice kennels there hagen. need to get you some of those nice dog houses like the dick.

Hose bib in each kennel with a ten foot hose on each. Eliminates the hassle and aggravation of dragging a hose in and out of each kennel.

In the background of this picture on the left you can see they way this one was laid out. It just makes life a lot easier with filling up water bowls and hosing down.

I’m leaning towards keeping the pad level in case I ever get out of the dog business and want to do something else with it in the future. Also if it’s level I’ll just set some simpson strong tie brackets on the pad for my posts when I go to build a cover over it. That will be easier than digging holes outside of the pad for setting posts and will make the structure easier to take down if I eventually choose to repurpose the area.

If I don’t like the trough I can always fill it in later

    12x24 or 26 if I remember right.

    That’s 2 5x10 kennels with a shared middle panel.

I have a decent sized fenced area around that now so the dogs aren’t cooped up all day. It helps a lot too.

Build a big enough pad/covering so that you have room for food containers and whatever else you want to keep nearby and out of weather. Go ahead and get a wysiwash and spare cannisters. Sloped pad with trough. When running water lines, I'd go ahead and run a fixed line to the up hill side of the trough. Open trough valve to full blast when washing down kennels and if the trough is done correctly, all waste will wash right away.

I got tractor supply specials, igloo kind. I’m not a dog house aficionado.

And poop gets shoveled over the kennel into the creek behind it.

I wasn't either, until I had to buy more after they chewed them all up.
