Default Wood Workers, I need some insight...

Is it possible to cut a burl off a black walnut and NOT kill the tree?

You got a picture of the burls location?

    Short answer. Most likely not.
“Duck hunting gives a man a chance to see the loneliest places …blinds washed by a rolling surf, blue and gold autumn marshes, …a rice field in the rain, flooded pin-oak forests or any remote river delta. In duck hunting the scene is as important as the shooting.” ~ Erwin Bauer, The Duck Hunter’s Bible, 1965

What you need…..is a tree man. An arborist. Maybe even The Lorax….

I knew that was coming. I'll get one.

Losing this particular tree wouldn't exactly upset me based on location. More curious than concerned.

Next question. Who feels like turning a big ol burl bowl for me?

I don't need advice from any tree huggin' hippies. This thing hits the ground, you'll have tables to build.

Burl is typically in the root ball/base of the tree. Save me some. I have Christmas gifts to start on soon.

To really get the whole burl you need to cut into the trunk. 99% chance it will kill the tree.

I saw one video where they slabbed one off a live tree. I think this one will hit the dirt though. I'll post a picture of it soon.

Not that soon. Probably take me a few more election cycles than the Q Kook Klan. They are quick to make their move.

Na that’ll have to come down to get the entire burl out or at least enough usable material to make something

    Ground check it.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

That burl looks like money to me. I would look into finding a person in the veneer industry and see what they would give you. My uncle use to do this while he was living and some of the burls would get big money.

My dad and I would hunt them, especially the big cherry ones. A friend of his would take them and put them under tarps for a year or more to get fungus growing, then turn them into bowls. For a kid it was big money, for the guy turning them, it was even bigger money. Of course my old man's idea of fun and exercise was logging and cutting firewood.

That will be sweet. I cut one limb and got 3 big fireplace mantels out of it. Tree is still kicking...

If you need advice on harvesting, slabbing, or selling, let me know. You can sell the burl as is but there is more money in it slabbed. Just remember that burl grain is different and precautions must be taken during drying.

Just cut the truck below the burl and above the little limbs. You get the burl and the tree will be just fine. It won’t even rub on your shed anymore.
