    Default Dove Season '23-24

I was able to get my corn and sunflowers planted last week before the rain. Did most of the work by moon light. Boy asked to help with planting this year which was really cool. 5 acres of sunflowers, 5 of field corn, and 1 acre of sweet corn. Have a small area for watermelon also. We will put the electric fence up soon.

I planted Charleston Gray last season because that was the biggest seed I could find. I used an old 2 row planter with corn plates. I think we picked about 50 or on about an acre. I bushhogged a lot more than that for extra dove food.

Isn't it a bit early for the sunflowers? I've been waiting until late may the last few years to plant the sunflowers and they are tipped over, dry and dropping seed in plenty time for the opener. I figure it helps them to last longer into the season if I put it off until May.

May is getting more hot and dry every year. Clearfield says 110 days.. Having them mature early-mid August is my preference. I haven't been doing this long... but I don't see seeds begin to drop until a week or two after the maturity date.

Checked the field today and did some spot spraying. Both corn and flowers are looking good.

Looks good but that pigweed in the sunflowers is going to be a bitch by Labor Day.

You ain't lying. Chemical timing was off some, but did the best my schedule would allow. Does anyone have cost for weed pulling labor? I'm just curious what that would cost for 6 acres of sunflowers. It would probably help me a lot next season to have them pulled now.

A million dollars. At least that's what I would charge. We had a work day last year at the dove club I'm a member of and maybe 8 people showed up. We spent about 3 hours pulling pigweed with garden rakes and almost had a couple guys monkey on us from the heat and humidity. Pulling them up is probably the most effective way but it'll make you sore for days. I've whacked them with a weed-eater with a brush blade. It was easier but still a lot of work. I've wondered if using a rope wick herbicide applicator would work on a dove field scale. Pigweed laughs at many of the most common herbicides though.

You're right about getting them out before they seed. If you can you should.

Y'alls are a lot more advanced than mine. I planted in mid May but had staggered germination due to lack of moisture. They look pretty good but they vary in size all over the field. I had to replant blotches in the corn because of the lack of water and it's growing in staggered stages.

I had the best weed control and cleanest sunflowers in years so far. Now if I can just keep the deer off of them, the only mystery will be why the birds left as soon as the season opened.

I got a late late start this year but I have my ground turned under pretty good. i figure another week and a couple more days on with the disc and itll be all ready to plant.

Guess ill mainly do millet but I am thinking about throwing some blackoil sunflowers in the planter and see how they work.

The past couple years I have only had to put down preemergent and the field stayed pretty clean so I never sprayed the clearfields. So blackoil would work if I can keep the grass at bay

1st time planting sunflowers with a electric fence, looking good so far. Broadcast, may have gotten them a little thick. Planted 2 rows Sesame, also 1st time ever. Rest of the field is Browntop, planted a few days ago, before this rain.
