    Default Charleston Mechanic

Looking for a good local mechanic in Charleston. Tired of going to Take 5 and don't want to go to a dealer if I can avoid it. I'm on James Island but work in Mount Pleasant so flexible on location. Nothing special just for a Toyota 4runner.

    Any recommendations?

I use Hudson Imports in Mt Pleasant bc I work over here also and have found them to be really good and straight forward.

I’ve also heard good things about LexTech in west Ashley.

We use Dinkins on James Island for my wife's Sequoia and I use Larson's in Mt. Pleasant. If you need a Toyota specialist call McIntosh in Mt. Pleasant. I'd recommend all of them.

Bert's on James Island is good, but they are busy.

For the McIntosh crowd, any reason to go there instead of Hudson’s?

There's a guy around Charleston that knows Yotas front-to-back, and side-to-side. He's very honest too, which is hard to find. His name is Adam Spurlock. I'll try to find out where he's working now and get back to you.

Taking one of mine to McIntosh this week. I was using Japanese import pros on John’s Island but they are really expensive.

On James Island, Brysons in Riverland terrace is great. Busy, but great. He’s been a pleasure to work with. Lex tech is also good.

Use Swifts Garage here on Johns and they have done well by us. Believe they have a location in MTP as well.

Not exactly in Charleston, but Pat’s automotive in goose creek is honest and fair. I’ve owned nothing but Toyota since I could afford to buy my own wheels and used to be die hard McIntosh until they tried to sell me an expensive pm job that I apparently didn’t need. Not to say there isn’t a place for them if you need a Toyota guru, but after being reduced to a one income household I’ve learned to save where I can.

We've used Byrd's Automotive in West Ashley.

Very Fair: he diagnosed my air conditioner problem on the second try, didn't charge me for the first try when it didn't work. Everyone else wanted to replace my compressor but he dug around and found a $3 wiring connector that had gone bad. Best price on oil change in town.

Lex tech is solid but busy and been looking for help last time I was there. Glen has always been straight. Good work. Just hate that you have to make appointments for everything now.

The owner/ head mechanic of lex-tech is good dude. Don’t care much for the counter/service writer dude if he is still there.
I would use them again if needed. Couple times I used him he was honest and didn’t try all the up sell B.S. Have not needed him since 2015 though.

I go to Charlestowne Import Automotive on upper meeting. They are good, fair, and know Toyotas. I have a 2001 tundra that they have done all the service on.

I trust the owner of CIA and tell him to do whatever he would do to his own car. Been using them for many years.

After the good things I said about Hudson Imports (I still like them for other stuff) them and LexTech are both saying they won’t work on a front end that has a leveling kit of more than 2.5”, my kit is 3”.

Any off-road shops or normal mechanics that will do front end work on a “lifted” truck?
