McMaster announces plan to abolish parole for all crimes in S.C.

COLUMBIA, S.C. --
State Attorney General Henry McMaster is pushing legislators to get rid of parole for South Carolina criminals.
McMaster says abolishing parole for all crimes will help people feel safer by giving them confidence that criminals will stay behind bars until they've completed their sentences.
In 1995, then-Gov. David Beasley signed a bill abolishing parole for the most serious crimes in South Carolina.
McMaster told The Associated Press last year that he wanted to extend that policy to crimes not covered under that law, like attempting a lewd act on a minor younger than 16 or the abuse and neglect of a vulnerable adult.
McMaster has said he's been studying a similar system in Virginia, where an overall truth-in-sentencing policy has been in place for 12 years.
