Just wanted to add that the Toadfish combos are nice for the money if you can get past the color of them. The rods seem to be well made and the reels, while not the smoothest, are ipx sealed for saltwater use.

Just saw this with the original post:

Talked with FFP recently and liked their pitch. Seem to be focused on customer service and will do a full rebuild at any time for $43. Good stats on the CE. I am thinking I’ll give them a go when I replace my current ones.

I can usually get about 200ish trips out of my BGs before they get grimy and go in the parts bin so the rebuild is a nice point.

Really a lot of these recommendations are useless without asking:
What price range are you trying to be in?
What are you typically throwing with these rods?

Good info, I would prefer to be under $400 per rod/reel. Mainly looking at throwing artificial and live baits under a cork.
I emailed FFP and his recommendation is the Osprey CE matched with the Bulls Bay sniper 7.0 Medium Heavy Fast. I fished an older Osprey model that a friend had, but they were replaced. Definitely leaning toward the Florida lineup but if something is as good or better for less than $400, I am all for saving the cash

Four of my Chesapeake guide friends use the Osprey spinning reels for their light tackle charter rods. 3000 size for rockfish, trout and puppy drum. All are happy with true durability of the osprey’s

A cork rod and an artificial rod are going to be different actions/power.
You can certainly be on the budget side for a bait/cork rod. The right action makes all the difference on artificials

*can’t vouch for the accuracy of the kitchen scale and the BG did have line on it.
    Size seems comparable

Thanks. I am ordering 2 of the FFP Osprey CE’s. Gonna pair them with Ugly Stick inshore selects. Appreciate the input

How do you like the handle versus the BG?

Those ugly sticks are fine for a bait rod or cork but you likely won’t like the tip for throwing jigs.

Used BGs for years, these just came in.
I like the smaller handle but BG does have a one piece handle which is a plus.

Good info, looks like the St Croix is better option. Any chance you looked at the Bulls Bay rods from Florida? The 7’ Sniper pairs well with that Osprey

Picked them up but never fished them so no real opinion.

Fished star rods for probably 15 years now so pretty set in my ways.

Stellar light fast taper is great for the money.

I like my falcon coastal and shimano nasci. All in for around $200 and great, dependable brands.
