    Default Boat without title?

    Good morning gents,
I’m looking at buying a boat. It’s a fixer upper. The post says they don’t have the title. If I can’t register it it’s useless to me. Is there a way that I could get the title? Has anybody ever done anything like this? Is this something a bill of sale would resolve (I don’t expect this is the case if it’s not in their name)?? Are there key questions I should ask? Abandoned boat??

    Or should I steer clear?

If the deal wasn’t so good I wouldn’t even consider it. But the deal is unreal, seriously..

A fish bites 2 times a day, right before I get to the water, and as soon as my boat gets back on the trailer.

    No title…great deal…sounds stolen

It’s going to be a serious pain at best to get a title, had a friend go through the process with a motor.
Bill of sale will not do anything without title
it’s also illegal for them to sell without a title.

I did it about 20 years ago on an old Jon boat. Wasn’t that bad then. Have no idea now.

Yes its actually pretty easy if it plays out like this:
If the boat owner has the boat registered in his name in the DNR system, try and get the hull ID number and search it through SNR data base for Lein or delinquent taxes:
    Here's the link: https://www2.dnr.sc.gov/BoatFacts/BoatFacts/Agreement
If he does in fact own the boat, and the person selling is the person it's registered to, you can fill out the BOS from the website: https://www.dnr.sc.gov/boating/Titli...pplication.pdf
Make sure it has all his correct information, and "it is notarized". I highly recommend going to DNR rather than mailing!! Highly recommend, or yes you will be waiting 6 months. They will tell you in person what's missing.

If there is a lien, Id stay away with no title, if there is delinquent taxes, it will be a toss up as I believe with new registration rules, taxes are assessed through the county, so again tread lightly,

If there is no liens, or delinquent taxes, and the owner is the registered party, I would have the BOS signed notarized, and go for it with no issues.

I've bought a boat load of boats like this.

If by chance you have any family or close friends in GA, register it there. It's relatively easy.

I live in georgia and have had issues here as well. One little jon boat I had a lot of issues with, but more so trailers. All the boats I've ever had I bought out of SC which doesnt require registration which all of yall know. Pain in the ass to get trailers registered without a title

If they fined me $100 dollars every time a warden has asked for my registration, I would still have more money in my pocket compared to the fees and taxes paid on my boats. It's a racket. If they stop you, tell them you sent in your paperwork a month ago but haven't gotten anything back yet. They know how long the process takes, so it's very believable.

I think you got all the intel you need. It can be done.

You can get a title for anything boat related if you know how to work the angles.

I bought a new motor from a non titling state. I knew the state was bad, but that experience taught me a new level of stupidity existed. I wouldn’t do what you’re attempting. The people who work in titling are pure dumbasses, managers included. Should you proceed, call the marine theft division if you can get them to answer the phone or hunt down that form with the affidavit for non titled vessels and motors and get the guy you’re buying the boat from to sign it at purchase and be ready to answer the phone in 6 months when they get around to your case

It doesn't matter how stupid the people are, it's the rules that matter. If you know the rules the stupid people have to comply to said rules.

You buy a motor from a non titling state with a bill of sale from the owner, you'll get a fresh SC title. Only real caveat is that if it lived in SC prior to going to said non-titling state if there are any back taxes owed you gotta get that straight before you can get a title.
