    Default Building a Log Cabin

I was thinking of building a small log cabin as a hunting shack. I've seen several YouTube videos of this being done in the wilderness, some talented people out there. What I've seen is them using what appears to be some type of pine from northern areas, think Alaska/West, nothing like I've seen around here.
So my question is?? What would be the ideal tree to use from our area? I know what a white oak and red oak are, but I have a bunch of gum trees, tall straight trees. I also have some pine trees. Can they be used for beams or siding?
Anybody have any experience doing such a build with native trees?

I read that Sweet Gum is used for railroad ties. Must have some structural properties.

Seems like most of the videos I have seen they all have access to that nice Douglas Fir wood on the west coast. I wonder what they use for all the cabins in the Smokies.

If you use sweet gum logs the cabin will continue to grow.

If I were building a log cabin with native trees in the area, I'd use cypress, exclusively.

To that point, I have a sill of a log cabin I found floating in the river after a flood. It's cypress. Had someone kept it up, it would still in one piece.
