Ive got a pup coming from a local breeder that puts out some good hunting stock. My trip to SD this year made me realize how much loved and missed bird hunting. I grew up around bird dogs an had retrievers but have never trained a pointing dog. Ill surely be hitting you guys uo for some advice.

I’ve never met a dog man of any kind that didn’t know a few cuss words

You getting it from the fellow up off of Hwy 9?
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Watch the Standing Stone Kennel videos on YouTube and use clicker training from the start. I had great success with mine using their methods.

Mine is one of the best dogs I’ve ever had. The only training he needed was obedience. He has successfully blood tracked deer, can point, and waterfowl hunt. His only draw back is he doesn’t know when to quit. He hunts 24/7, all day everyday. If I don’t keep him entertained, he gets into trouble fast. He hates cats and will kill them with no mercy, his 2nd biggest hate is male dogs and coyotes. I can’t take him to dog parks or anything because the bastard wants to fight any dog that stands up to him. I’ve had multiple trainers and people try to help me, it’s just how he is. The only dog he feared was my wife’s 7lb chihuahua, he’d yelp and run from her in a heart beat.

He loves hunting absolutely anything, the only he loves more is my kids. They torture that dog but he goes every where with them and hates not being by their side. The GWP is a different dog than any lab I’ve owned. Good luck with yours, you’ll learn new cuss words fast.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve ordered the book. He should be ready to go in a few weeks.

I did a trained retrieve with Claddaugh online. It's broken into weekly segments and had live interaction and question times remotely.

    NAVHDA chapter was helpful too.

Meet Fritz. He looks cute, but that is a terrorist in a fur coat. My other dog and our poor cat are shellshocked.

Haha. Yea, GWP puppies are helions, all teeth and fight. We almost changed our gwp's name to "Gator" after the first week. It levels out in a few months.

    Good looking pup!

Few months? My boy didn’t calm down until 8. 8 years old. 8 years of hell.

Congratulations. I missed this earlier. Great dogs. Not for everyone. Demand a high level of activity and stimulation.

My first was the high test version of the GWP. It was a for real fist fight for alpha for the first 4 years, and even after that he was just sneaky about being bad.
    Helluva damned dog though.

Good luck. Get him socialized with the cat early. He will lose him self in instinct and wring him out if you're not careful.
