Default “Custom Built” Prescribed Fire Rig

Thought you guys might appreciate this. Skid Sprayer came from Northern Tool. I built the rack to hold four drip torches, a cooler, and a 13gal tank with a 12v fuel pump that supplies a “torch wand”. Basically a one man burn buggy. Pretty proud of the build I’ve been building it in my head for a year or so and it turned out exactly how i pictured it in my head. This allows me to light fire much longer without changing torches or refilling and it also allows me to effectively “shoot” fire into a stand and where I don’t have good fuel right on the edge of the firebreak. I’ll update with some action shots when the weather allows me to put some fire down!

That looks like a nice setup! I burnt my personal farm last Thursday for the 1st time before the big front that pushed through that evening. To say I was puckered up was an understatement but damn it turned out good. Looking forward to seeing some white heads bobbing through in a couple months @ daylight.

Slick rig QH. We burnt up a Ranger a few years ago with a similar rig, I’m sure you have some sort of a Fire Extinguisher handy.

About the only thing that survived was the Yeti.

Don't get that thing hung up on a stump...it doesn't end well most of the time with fire on your heels!

Getting a fire extinguisher to mount on it today and it will rarely go off the road or break. I use the torch on foot if I need to run a strip.

One more word of advice about using porches with electric pumps, do not drive with that thing lit outside of your burn unit! They do tend to drip and leak a little bit

T'man22, tell me about your road. I just had one cut around my place. Now it needs leveling & packing down. That one looks fairly new.86E4730E-A689-46C7-A5C8-DB3B43EBCA16.jpg

The actual torch is attached to a brass sprayer trigger. So I’m lighting fire next to me not behind me. And the torch will actually shoot fire a good 10-15ft. I ran the same setup last year so I’ve got some experience with it. It’s actually a pain in the ass to keep lit sometimes.

I built roads using cypress and pines as bases through flats where a dueled up skidder will not pass through. The key to a good road is ditches, crown the road, grass the road and stay off the road . The problem with roads is everyone wants to drive on a newly built road after it rains for some mud on their truck . Ruts retain the water and some never dry out.

Mars - nothing special about the road/firebreak. Actually it was put in probably 15+ years ago. It's never been plowed and I only used a root rake to clean the leaves and straw off for the burn. It's in the piedmont with a fair amount of topography so I try to avoid soil disturbance if at all possible. I've got one major road through the center of our farm that was crowned, ditched, and grassed. I can drive the road after a rain and not get the 1st drop of red clay on my truck. Tim said it best above.....crown, ditch, and stay off it for a few years and let it setup. Drive it when it's dry and you will have a road that will last.
