I got started on a 1100 lite and I still shoot it some. I have the regular stock and the one my dad cut down. I have it for my son. It has very little recoil and is reliable.

I highly recomend trying to find a Franchi 720. Shortest and lightes gas gun I ever found.

It's the same one you finished off B's deer with last year

It’s all what you like. I haven’t had to drill any gas ports in a benelli……

Basic physics. A light gun is gonna kick regardless of caliber. Buy stick on lead weights and put em inside a synthetic stock or for a wood one, drill a hole, then use the same bit to drill a hole in a 2x4 and fill hole with melted lead. Split the 2x4, remove the cylinder shaped piece of lead, insert said lead into said hole in stock. I think many tire stores can't hardly get lead anymore because of EPA BS. But adding weight will reduce the kick some. Will even help make a gun less muscle heavy.

I’m ordering a Mossberg SA28 youth this week. I will report back with results. I think that 2-3/4” 3/4 oz 9’s for doves, Boss 7’s for ducks, and TSS 9.5’s for turkeys. My 9 yo gal is ready to move on from the 510 Bantam .410

Appreciate the recommendations...I was initially trying to stay away from a Semi for now but I'm picking up what y'all are putting down. I was going to handload some reduced recoil rounds for a pump, but may just go with 3/4 oz rounds in a semi if it will cycle properly. Will look into the SA-08 and others.

I have this, it’s still a touch too big for a 6yr old but they can shoot it with minimal help.

For us short people, y'all need to just pay me to cut your guns down and install a grind-to-fit Limbsaver pad to fit your LoP. Not hard, but if you simply don't wanna mess with it, holler.

If it's for a kid start with the thinnest pad, then can add one of the thicker pads as the kid and their LoP grows. Low profile pad is I think 5/8 or ľ". Standard is 1", nitro pad is 1 ˝".

Affinity 3 20ga Compact. Just take it to a gunsmith first and have the loading latch checked or fixed. After that, they will run great. I just sold mine to a friend for his boy.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

All 3 of mine had Mossberg Bantams 510's. The "notched" foregrip makes them easier to handle and cycle for youngsters. I appreciated the safety on top so it is easy to see.
Honey...I'll do it after the season is over.

my dad started me on a Stevens 311 side by side in 20 ga. Two triggers, two shots.

Thats what both my boys started with.

moved from there to an ithaca 37 featherweight Pump. make them aim before pulling trigger.

Autos make it REAL easy to shoot a box of shells. They both shoot autos now.

Haddrels in Mt pleasant has 2 affinity compacts. Camo 26” and what appears to be a black 24” but not certain on that length on the black. For some reason I seem to remember that’s why I did t buy the black one few years back.

Mag spring was super stiff when new. My dad swapped his M2 20g spring with the one in the affinity. Ironically improved both.

Have an 11 y/o that has the franchi affinity and he likes it a lot. Older son is 13 and we got him a benelli montefeltro. Bought at Barton’s in Columbia. They sold it with two stocks - one compact and one regular. Figured he’d shoot it until he wanted to switch to a 12 - we’d change the stocks and I’d start shooting the 20. Been super happy with both of them.

I know fishsticker isn’t necessarily looking for the cheapest option out there but I will throw this info out, Cabela’s recently had some Charles Daly 20gauges on sell for $249.99 in full size and youth models. I’ve got other 20gauges but I picked one up for a beater squirrel hunting gun and to let others use it as needed and it’s worked well for me so far.

One thing I dislike about a pump for kids is I’ve seen several times where a smaller framed kid struggles to quickly and efficiently work the pump and in the midst of them pumping the gun they inadvertently point the gun in an unsafe direction. On a youth turkey hunt last year I watched a boy miss and he was struggling to pump the gun and I had to grab it and shuck another shell in for him And hand it back to him while a groups of Jakes stood around looking confused.

    Update:

I am experimenting with reduced recoil handloads in a Stevens O/U with a shortened stock and 24" bbls. Current loads are looking like 5/8 oz #9 over 15 grn Unique with 28 ga fiber wad in the bottom and an overcard on top.

Will report my findings when we head to the gun club this week. Hopefully this will get him started...

Looking at finding an old stock to cut down and put on one of my old Berettas. Have several 20 ga 302/303/390s that I can put a 22" bbl on that I know will cycle 3/4 oz loads reliably. Figure I'd rather put the $$ in a stock for something I have and the boy will keep, rather than something I will just have to get rid of later on.

Appreciate all the thoughts and suggestions.

I don't know why that gun didn't take off...I've got one and it's the most reliable auto I've ever had. And the easiest gas gun in the world to clean. Light weight, light recoil, shoots damn fine.

I'm keeping my eye out for an Escort youth for my kid. It has a magazine cut off, if I'm not mistaken, so I can just feed my kid one shell at the time and still not be jiggling his teeth loose with a light pump.
