    Default 51.15

Ran an 8 hour ultra last weekend just north of Jamestown in the National Forest. This is a local event started by a fellow runner from the lowcountry. Retreat Repeat is a 1.65 mile loop, mostly consisting of dirt road, field and a couple short sections of single-track trail. I've gotten to 50k the last 2 years but had back issues last year so had to quit early. I've been seeing a chiropractor and luckily my back is feeling much better now. My goal was to hit 50 miles and try to win if possible. I did both. Luckily my buddy with the course record (52.7) wasn't running it this year. I lapped 2nd place later in the race so I knew I didn't have to push hard for the win. I stopped at lap 31 with a running time of 7hrs 43mins. Average pace with bathroom breaks and water refills 9:03. 51.15 miles, this was my longest continuous run to date.

That’s one hell of an accomplishment running wise.

    That's impressive.

What was the mental game like running such a short loop over and over?

Thanks everyone. The loop isn't that bad at all, besides I'm used to running the same thing over and over. I do 1/4 mile hill repeats for +10 miles, I run the same route almost everyday at my house. At least in a race like this you get to chat with and see people throughout the day.

How many miles a week are you putting in to train for Ultras?

Keep thinking I want to get into more distance trail runs, but don't think I can really train properly due to time restraints. Currently I run around 30 miles a week.

And great job on the race.

Thanks. If I'm training for an ultra or long event I try to run around 70mpw. A lot of times my body won't let me do all running so I'll supplement with cycling(gravel/MTB) or the elliptical. I pretty much exercise an hour a day with very few rest days. Long runs are key obviously for ultras. I did a couple 22 milers and one 30 mile long run leading up to the 8 hour event.

Heck no. There's no way i could "run" that far. I have no desire to enter a race if I have to walk it. I'm thinking maybe a 100k or 12 hour would be possible. I have a couple off road duathlons (mtb/trail run) that I'm doing next for fun.
