    Default Early Retirement

Much to her dismay, our bird season came to an end today. Callie drops puppies next week, but had one last hunt in her this morning.

I had an hour or two I could afford to burn before heading into work and she made it count. She worked a hair slower than normal but otherwise just wouldn’t quit. The spot we chose was a fairly easy spot for a pregnant dog and I was hoping birds would be there. Sure enough, she found them and it was a memorable last hunt to end it on.

It’s been another great year so far behind her, but now hanging it up for a few weeks. Maybe she’ll be up to getting back in the upland woods in February.

Well that's awesome. Are you mostly hunting cane or privet creek bottoms? Public or private? Not looking for spots, just ideas on the type of cover where you're having success. Would like to try my dad's English cocker on woodcock.

A famous grouse and woodcock writer from the northeast is quoted as saying, "Woodcock are where you find them." I don't think he was being smart when he said it and neither am I. Overhead cover and earth worms are the only constants required.

They love thickets. Until they are in a wide open field next to a ditch. Great hunt!

Tell me about these woodcock. If Quail is a 10/10 on the bird tastiness scale with a frosted dog turd being 1/10, Where do these woodcocks fall?

2/10 - if you make a nice blackberry compote to top them with.

It’s all about the sport. They’re terrible to eat. Kinda like sea ducks.

Well I had wondered why my grandfather who loved upland game hunting had never taken me woodcock hunting as a kid. Now it all adds up.
