    Default Scuppernong Vines

My grandad has 3 well established scuppernong vines that have been in his yard for for probably 15-20yrs now. When they are in full production mode he has decided it has become too much work for him at 83yrs old to be out there picking them and washing them every day, putting them up or giving them away. He has decided to cut one down but offered it to me first if I wanted to try to move it to my yard. I’d love to have it but was curious if anyone on here was scuppernong experts and knew how well they would do trying to transplant an already established whole vine like that before I put a lot of effort into digging it it and setting up some posts for it to grow on? Or will it need to be cut all the way down any re-started from scratch?

I've inquired about this before. I don't think you can dig up and transplant the whole vine, but I may be wrong. I think you have to prune it and use some of the pruned vines to start your own. I think Tater may be the expert here.

Of course, I'm getting old and can't remember much anyway...

If you're wanting it for sentimental value, I'd cut it back to the stump but leave up to four good healthy thick runners that you can train. Taking a clipping and rooting it would be easier.

There's also the whole thing about varieties and some needing males and females.

How long do you have to move it?

I’ll shoot you a text. Most of these heathens don’t deserve this kind of knowledge.

Don't be mean. If Michael is willing, I'd love to get some clipping and start one of my own...

I've got three or four vines that are in a bad place without enough sun and I've considered moving them. I've seen videos of people cutting them back to the stump and digging them up with as much roots as possible to replant them. I'd appreciate hearing the wisdom of anyone who has actually replanted some.

I've got a couple that were planted in a bad spot I'm getting ready to transplant and I don't care if they die or not.

You have to try to kill them. Do exactly as you said. The less growth you leave the better. The opposite for the roots; save as much as you can. And when you replant use some water to listen the dirt and take your time as air around the roots is what causes most problems.

Rooting are much easier but if you need to move it you need to move it.

Unlike cookers, muscadines don’t need shade.
