Default What am I doing wrong

I've set 7 coyote traps on fresh sign. Yesterday one had a footprint in between the pan and the bait hole so I rebedded it a little closer.

Next trap had 3 or 4 prints all around the trap but none directly on the pan. Neither had the bait dug up.

Third trap was dug up and laying upside down without being tripped. Bait not dug up there either.

I'm sure there's some subtle little thing I'm doing wrong or not quite right.

These are in three separate areas.

    Give me some ideas please.

Let the traps sit for a few days that were worked, Never had a ton of success on the first night. Your 3rd set wasn't bedded well enough and whatever stepped on it felt it move.

If he digs it up, it's because he knows it's there.

Bedding is important. No movement whatsoever when pushed on the corners.

Obviously, screens or fluff under the pan will help with it not tripping.

I haven't set shit. It's too wet where I am in this clay.

Come to think of it, I've got a place that's sandy that needs some attention. I might head over there this weekend.

Distance from dirt hole that I use:

One hand print (stretched) from the hole and a half trap to the right.

It's incredible how smart those dang coyotes can be and how they avoid traps. My dad deals with the same issues you've mentioned on their property in Tennessee. Even had trail cam videos showing the yote clearly figuring out something was suspicious and leaving the area.

Yep. They're kicking my ass so far. I'm doing okay with the coons and possums but the canines are a whole nother ballgame. Good news is I get to spend a couple days with a professional trapper next week so hopefully that will flatten out the learning curve a little

You mean he didn't hide in the bushes and try and nab one with his bare hands as it walks by? How unethical is that?

    Hell yeah.

I was going to suggest that you just ask your old lady, they as a species are extremely adept at pointing out everything [we're] doing wrong...

    Very nice.

    Good work!

I will add that I try my best to control scent. Rubber boots, different gloves for bedding traps than I use for handling lure/bait, and a piece of cardboard to keep my knees off the ground.

I would except she made me turn loose a squirrel I caught this morning because it wouldn't be fair to shoot it in the trap
