Note the pinky, he had the tip amputated so he wouldn’t miss the playoffs!

If they'd had targeting back in the day none of these guys would have played 2 games in a row.

And if today’s QB’s had played back then they wouldn’t last 2 games either.

I remember my uncle telling me about ye olden days of Dick Butkus. I wanted him to draw a comparison to a modern player, and offered up Ray Lewis. He said Dick Butkus would send Ray Lewis home crying for his momma!

Ray Lewis's size & speed made him a bad man for sure.

These listed will remain the bests of all time due to the pussification of today's game. Knocking the hell outta people is no longer allowed in the sport.

    I agree, MJ of LB’s.

Depends if today’s rules on the rules of 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

All of these players mentioned are in league of their own an to me best of all time. To quote Bum Phillips “they may not be top of the class but damn sure does not take long to call the roll “ (his reference regarding Earl Campbell )

However have to admit I loved Lambert despite being a life long Raiders fan.

But if this guy played in todays game he would have had to pay the NFL to play due to fines he would be hit with

Greatest OLB? No question. Greatest defensive player ever? Perhaps. Greatest overall LB of all time? Not so much.

Really hard to compare the old school and newer guys. All mentioned are badasses. But, combination of size and speed of today's players is scary! Weight programs, training techniques and diet have made a huge difference. Some of those old school guys could have been even scarier in todays world.

I spent a week on a fishing trip with a man that was Dick Butkus's backup in college at Ill. This guy lost a few fingers, and a large portion of one of his thighs in a gunpowder mixing mishap as a kid. He was tough, and his stories of Butkus confirmed that Butkus was what you saw....BADASS!

Butkus de-cleated a lot of RB and QB but was also brutal on blockers. He was an animal on the field and force to be reckoned with.

Then you got guys like Earl Campbell and John Riggins that went looking for the Butkus, Lott, Singletary, LT’s to run over when they had the ball.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.
