    Default Seasoning firewood

We have a wood-burning fireplace. Up until now I have just bought firewood by the truckload but as we were clearing trails, we have plenty of wood on site so wanted to get back to the days of splitting our own but am unfamiliar with the process and timeline.

What trees are desirable and what should be avoided?
How long between felling the tree and splitting?
How long between splitting and burning?
How can one find fat lighter?

Truly seasoned wood is under 20%

Look for fat lighter is as simple as looking for old pine stumps

If you kick a stump and it breaks your toe, it's fat lighter.

Google is helpful, but not too much interactive dialogue. It's always a gamble here, the ratio of helpful/ not helpful but more times than not you'll get at least one person who's willing to answer some specific

I’ve recently taken up the hobby of looking for fat lighter. In two weeks I’ve got more fat lighter stumps laying in my wood pile then I will used in a lifetime.

Split it as soon as you cut it. Green wood splits easier than dry wood. If you are using a hydraulic splitter then split whenever you want to. 30-60 days is ample drying time otherwise you are burning “tote” wood, more you burn, more you tote. Once the fire is going, throw some green logs on. Burns hotter and longer just slower and harder to start. Laurel, water, willow, southern red, and blackjack oaks are my preferred trees. Don’t mess with live oak. If you have any longleaf or slash pines near you that would be a good place to start looking for fatwood. Good luck

now that i know what to look for, i think i'm good. I know when i cut a pine and leave the stump, it feels petrified after a while, almost like stone hard. I assume that what i'm looking for?

But in case, where are your kids located? I don't make it to camden much, but my mom and sis do so might ask them to pick some up for me

Fat is great for starting campfires but I would hesitate to use it in a wood stove. At least use it very sparingly and have your chimney cleaned regularly. It puts off a LOT of soot.

You can use fat lighter to start fires in a fireplace, no problem at all. The key to having a clean flue is to burn hot fires every now and then. With wood stoves that is even more important.

Eric - I will give you a fat lighter stump or two if you need them. When they stumped the hay fields around me 100 years ago they piled it all on the edge of my property. I’ve got more than me and my next 3 generations will ever burn.

Come to think of it I should probably put a fire break around the lighter knot mountain.
