Every regular season game mattered when writers chose the champion. The bowl system still had prestige, then, too; .500 teams didn't get invited, even some winning ones.
You tuned into games even if the teams weren't ones dear to your heart. But "we" didn't like that system because nothing was settled on the field. But as we all can see, the controversy just got greater once "we" got what "we" wanted.
