    Default Daddy-Daughter Fishing

Normally a pair of 18" stripers isn't much to post about. But this coming on an evening when my daughter requested a Daddy-Daughter date because I'd been traveling so much for work lately and she missed me makes it different.

She's 5 now and able to stay safe in the kayak with me so I took her out to Greenwood to a spot that normally produces well. I've already taken her on several worm+bobber trips to catch tiny bluegills but this was the first time she'd been with me when I caught fish to eat. My hope was the stripers would start feeding before sunset and she'd get to see some action.

Her face when she saw them bust a pod of shad on the surface was something else. She'd very quietly point and tell me she saw it, just as I told her to do.

Both fish she helped me fight and got to feel the power of the stripers. Her giggles and yelling could be heard across the lake as she struggled to not lose my fishing rod (I had one hand on to make sure). She was overjoyed when we got them in the net and on the stringer. All she talked about on the way home is how much fun she had and that she can't wait to eat them for dinner. And that's exactly what we did.

If this ain't the good stuff I don't know what is.

Thanks fellas. Probably the most significant moment of the trip was her seeing me knife those fish to bleed them out right before I paddled back to the landing. She was a little upset and liked seeing them alive more.

Then it occurred to me that for the last few years she recalls me taking home plenty of dead animals and fish but never witnessed me kill something that was alive. So I explained why I had to do that and she felt better. Big moment for sure in helping her understand and appreciate what is involved in getting meat or fish to her dinner plate.

I think she's about ready for a .22 and a squirrel trip! If not this Winter, next Winter.

    Nice job man.

It’s also good to see another fisherman with a sense of style like myself sporting crocs.

Mostly on my back and ears though.

    Good trip, Jimmy!
