    Default Kodiak Island Protein Retrieval

Trying to put together a trip to Kodiak for Caribou, blacktail, fish and a few ducks to cross off the list.

It affordable but what I am not seeing is cost to fly all that shit home. A set of caribou antlers, two Blacktail that'll probably ride fine inside the caribou horns...then fish, and meat.

What's been the general experience of shipping a couple hundred lbs of meat and fish vs. checking it on an airline? I figure I can ship my gear home and check my guns and meat. Just need to figure out if it's going to be $500 or $1k....

I had 2 caribou racks shipped back from AK in 2000 via FedEx. I was a bit nervous about their condition when I left them. All they asked me to do was wrap the small area of skull in plastic and tape, then take some old garden hose (they provided) and cut 6" pieces off and put on the ends of the antlers. I don't recall the cost. I can say my young black FedEx driver refused to touch them to bring them into my condo at the time.

You can buy a lot of protein from the local butcher shop for that kinda money.

What kind of coolers did they put them in for $49 each?
Was that shipping price for next day air or two day?

We flew back a bunch of vacuum sealed fish 15 years ago. Halibut, salmon, rockfish, good stuff. It was not in good condition we got home. Maybe we should have resealed it, I don’t know but it all ended up freezer burnt. Would not recommend self transporting.

My wife and I flew back a couple coolers of salmon in 2014 or 2015. Everything made it back great with no issues.
