    Default Black duck markings

Practicing for next years contest and I thought I would enter the Maryland duck stamp contest. These markings look correct for black duck? Trying to make sure I differentiate from a mottled duck. Speculum is black purple and blue with no white correct?

Consider coming to the house where you can look at some reference mounts in hand and take some pics if you'd like. Also, there are a ton of fantastic photos on the web these days which can really be helpful. Suggest you look at some pics of some black ducks and then check the tail and underside of left wing for starters.

I would know that it's a black duck. But, the black under the wing doesn't make sense and it you really want to get technical, the more genetically solid black is it will have more dark feathers it will have under the wing. Mallards are usually pure white. See page 15 on .pdf the linked below...

Looks great. The only thing I would change is the background (if it were mine)

You can find the king everywhere from the deepest cypress swamp to Central Park.

But he reigns over the eastern salt marsh.

In Maryland’s case, a phrag marsh backdrop.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.

I would put a Dollar General in the background somewhere to make it more realistic.

Thanks yes on all the pics Ive seen it looks like underwing is mostly white but I didn’t have a good close up…. I have a bunch more shading to do under wing. I think some of the pics I’ve seen are actually mottled. I was working on one that is better but I decided I needed to show the white under the wings as it seems to be one of the things that stand out the most.

It is one of my biggest regrets that I took for granted killing a few black ducks when I was young. I don’t know that I would have enjoyed them more, just appreciated them a little bit more. Really majestic critters

Looks great. I’d accentuate the darker band that runs across the eye…love that about the black.
