    Default The age-old question....

    I keep hearing it.
I hear it enough that it becomes legend, ne fact.

"my doves are going to migrate ahead of this storm"

I've never had anyone explain the science behind it.

Mainly because it doesnt happen all the time (IMO).

    Discuss?

You don’t think weather can push them out? Happens with ducks and doves all the time. Not an absolute but definitely a factor. What is there to discuss?

Nothing would make me happier than for you to call a hunt Monday and all your birds be gone.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.

So in this case will they all fly north, west, northwest to avoid it? Are doves really smart enough to know which way to go or how far to fly to miss the rain? If so how do they know it's coming? Maybe they have spies looking into our windows while we watch the weather channel?

There. I did my part to discuss 2th

We've had a few good shoots right before, after, and during near misses or tropical depressions swiping through.

And since weather is brought up, I hope you summer haters are happy. It's breezy and chilly, pretty sure I'm playing in pants today.

Weather certainly will make birds leave but why don't the birds north of us show up to fill in the void?

It has before with us.. into the third week. The last time was an auction shoot off of here. I was hesitant to call it, the day before I sat overlooking the field from our cabin and watched birds appear after a slow shoot before. Piling in with the wind. I texted Boozer and gutpile, the birds hung around for a couple of days.

Winter doves are like that as well.

If it's been slow I don't really mind if something blows through, there's a chance of them showing up.

surely weather can effect migration patterns....but if that pattern is to fly south and a big ass storm is pushing up from the south....wouldn't the inverse be true that you would pick up birds?

I've just never understood the premise. Its stated. A hunt is called. Game over.

i'm just wondering the thought process. I've seen a bunch of birds appear after a storm and kind of giggled wondering who lost theirs.
I am not saying its right or wrong. If you have em, shoot em. I was just wondering what other people have seen AFTER a storm.

My hypothesis is that it takes a while for birds to find food in a new location. If the storm is bad enough to run all the current birds off, it will take longer for any new birds to show up in your field. If the storm is moderate, there may be enough gregarious local birds left to show the new birds where the food is.
