    Default iPhone Backup Issues

I give up... I need some tech assistance to help figure out why I can't get my iPhone to run a full backup. I keep getting error messages, whether I try it directly plugged into the wall, or using the laptop with iTunes.

I also can't get the newest update directly since I only have about 1.4 GB open and it's not enough. It should work using the laptop, though. When trying to download the newest update I get an 'error 1667'.

It's an iPhone SE (original one) with 32 GB. It's getting old, but it runs fine, just can't get it backed up and the latest update (or two).

Any ideas, other than buying a new phone?

    Thanks.

Bummer... but the problem still holds since I've not been able to update to IOS 15(xx).

Thanks for the info on the culling. Guess I'll give it some thought one of these days when I have nothing else to do.

Agreed iPhones are not perfect but to hell with a droid.

I'm on my third I think smart phone.. I can get five years or more out of one.. at the displeasure of my few text group friends. I don't enjoy a lot of change, maybe two apps, and don't care about the latest phones or technology.

I thought internetting on a phone was a fad, and something I'd never really do or get used to. I don't even own a laptop now.

You are likely out of iCloud storage space. If you don’t have enough space it can’t update. Either delete stuff or buy 50gb of storage for $1 a month

Good point. I’ll double check it, but I upgraded my iCloud space early this year because I figured that was the issue, and I needed the space anyway. But, it didn’t fix my backup problem. I’ve had no problem upgrading until this last one and am currently on IOS 14.8, with one left to 15.x before it gets stalled out.

I agree, although I’ll ‘never’ not use a laptop as long as I’m writing client reports and longer emails, and spreadsheets, etc. It’s just no fun to type everything with one finger when I’m good with all ten.

Updates aren't all they're cracked up to be. Never download one until it's been out for awhile. I keep automatic updates turned off for a reason.

I understand that. Just like I wait a year on new software and vehicles. I typically stay one upgrade behind, but this one will hopefully fix the battery draining problem that my current version supposedly causes. At least it did on my wife’s phone.

If you only have 1.4 gig unused on your phone then that’s the problem.

The update is larger than the available space.

You need to delete apps, pictures and videos to free up space.

If you don’t have Google photos app on your phone I suggest you download it and let it auto upload your photos and videos. Then you will always have an extra copy of them if your iCloud backup ever gets wiped.

Google photos also has a utility that will delete photos from your phone that have already been uploaded but you still have to go to the recently deleted folder and delete them out after the utility runs

I think you're right. I was under the assumption that an update also deleted parts of the prior version. I couldn't find anything about the 'net impact', so I'm guessing that the 3.25 GB is about it.

I've already backed up my iCloud photo files to an external 1T HDD, so I'm covered there.

What I need to figure out is why I can't get this phone backed up, even using the laptop connection and iTunes. Any ideas? I've followed all of the instructions I can find without foraging around the Apple board.

I've been trying to figure out the storage. That is, I haven't been able to figure out what all of this "Documents and Data" includes, since I've downloaded most of the .pdf and scan items to my laptop. The original pictures are already stored on iCloud, so it's only small versions on the phone for me to draw on if I want something, and, as mentioned above, they have already been downloaded to my external 1T HDD as backup.

I just need to figure out how to dig through this D&D data...
