The VX6 should be available near your budget if you look.

What swamp rat said. Trijicon accupoint 4-16x50 is a good option as well.

Haven’t bought a scope in years but best bang for the buck at that time for my eyes where the meopta 3-12x56 meostars R1 or the R2. I can see with it till the very end of shooting time. It’s almost on par with my Zeiss diavari 3-12x56. But that scope was twice as much and it was was bought 10-15 years sooner (around 2001). I’ve tried several others but they didn’t work with my eyes. My least favorite of the higher in scopes were the schmidt and benders. Just didn’t work for me. Looking for low light capabilities I’d stay away from the higher zooms. Also don’t let someone tell you that you have to have the larger tubes. They don’t help with light gathering capabilities. Only allow more windage and elevation adjustments.

50-56mm objective is good but try to get one with 34mm tube for better light gathering

34mm tube doesn’t do anything for light gathering. It allows more adjustment in the erector tube.

Leupold vx5hd or vx6hd will be your best bet. Lightweight, great glass, and able to dial to 500yds.

I would definitely listen to these other guys, they kill WAY more deer than me.

I have a ZEISS hd5 conquest scope on my sako 85. It is a tack driver and does everything I’ve ever needed in a scope. Dropped two 8s last year at over 380 yards. As someone mentioned meopta offers good glass too. At one point they used to have the same lense coatings as Swarovski. Not sure if that is still the case but they perform.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a nightforce if you want a brick on top of your rifle. They are just heavy. Absolutely great rifle scopes but heavy.

I’m not a Leupold fan but the VX5HD I put on my 6.5 is hard to beat in that price point. Meopta Meostar, Trijicon Accupoint, S&B Klassik, Swaro Z5 or Z3.

    I have a S&B Klassik 3-12X50 L7 Illuminated with dials I’d sell. New in the box, $1200.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I like the Swarovski z5 a lot. Pretty affordable too. Crystal clear really and won’t break the bank.

If you’re really going to be shooting out to 500 I would get a scope with a reticle that had some wind hold reference. The two Leupolds are great hunting scopes, but not the best choice for long distance shooting.
