I forget what these are called but they are not edible. They might fool some people and look like oysters because of how they grow but oysters do not grow on oaks. Also you'll see underneath them that the gills stop at the stem whereas with oysters the gills run down the stem.
Thanks for the info, they will stay in place
I’m not telling anyone to pick and eat wild mushrooms.
However you are a grown man and it is chicken of the woods.
Be proactive about improving public waterfowl habitat in South Carolina. It's not going to happen by itself, and our help is needed. We have the potential to winter thousands of waterfowl on public grounds if we fight for it.
It’s just young.
If you do decide to pick it, do your own research.
Cook well, and try a little.
Foraging can be really fun, but their are dangers.

I was thinking the were Chicken o the woods at first glance…now I’m thinking not. Hmmm.
“I can’t wait ‘till I’m grown” is the stupidest @!#* I ever said!
I’m with bog…I’m thinking Chickens. They are supposedly great, but a lot of folks will have these cause some GI distress while a lot of folks have no issues and love them. But, with bog again, don’t eat them based wholly what someone online tells you.

I'm no expert but my googling says that can't be chicken of the woods because it has a stem. Also, the gills might be another disqualifier, hard to tell from the pictures.

Not chicken. Can't say what it is. But it's not chicken.
Definately not chicken. Looks like Phyllotapsis nidulans (aka orange mock oyster). Inedible.

How about these? Chicks of Woods?
Not even close to chicken. I’d say either oyster or angels wings, leaning more towards the latter. Need more info to say. DBDD4CFC-1BF3-414C-874D-4102CB58A96E.jpg0EAE87EB-7170-4F88-8C45-7420F4E162BA.jpg
Not chickens
Absolutely not chicken of the woods. Chicken of the woods is a brighter orange and yellow color. Just Google some images real fast and you'll see
Hickory, what book is that?
Gentlemen - chicken comes in lots of color variations and there are 2 species of Sulphur Shelf mushrooms in SC.
Both vary in color based on “age”
OP - see if they have white spores.
Again, do not any mushroom based off what you read here.
I believe it to be early chicken. But I’m not a professional mushroom man.

You shroom pickers amaze me. I’d love to be able to harvest mushrooms out of the woods but I doubt I’d ever be comfortable enough to do it given that it seems like an edible mushroom always looks similar to one that’ll kill the hell out of you. That and the out-of-pocket cost of having my stomach pumped.
Any specific books y’all would recommend for fungi identification?
