    Default White Pelicans

Never seen one before and there are 12-15 in our cove on Hartwell now. I googled them and saw where Wateree had a bunch last year. Is this something new or have just missed it in my 30+ years on the lake?

I see them every year on Marion. First time I saw them I thought they were swans. They were a good ways away. Last group probably had 30 in it and we’re out with the comorants. I see them for about 2 weeks then their gone.

They used to winter in Charlotte Harbor on a certain flat that was excellent for winter tailing redfish , they became one of my favorite birds and frequently would watch them waiting for the tide to get right.

the picture above is from a rock island on Toledo Bend lake on border of Texas and Louisiana, I was excited to know they were around in huge numbers when i moved here.

There’s a small flock that winters in the folly/Kiawah area. I consider it good luck to see them for some reason.

Not super common to see over here:

February 1, 1994 I drove from Moncks Corner to Huntington Beach to see my first American White Pelican. It was a big deal - it lit up the bird hotlines. By 2010 huge flocks were common on the middle SC coast during winter. I don't believe in man-made global warming but the American white pelicans, reddish egrets, black-bellied whistling ducks, roseate spoonbills, etc certainly believe in man-made something...

Did a reverse sear on a couple of pelican breast....was not a successful venture. Wings weren't so bad....I would put them on par with a bald eagle wing

yeah, I saw them on Wateree, the lake, several years back for the first time. A couple of them hung around for a bit about five years ago.

This is a horrible pic but you'll have to trust me that they are pelicans. This was Dec 1st 2021 on Lake Marion. I saw them everyday for about 4 days and then they were gone.

Started seeing some roseate spoonbills show up for the season, one of my favorites to see in the marsh.

Capt Tom taught me a very interesting cause of Pelican mortality that I never considered. Perhaps he will see this and tell the research results.
