I absolutely love my SUV for hunting. Until that smelly yellow dog gets in his crate after a duck hunt. Then I wish I had a truck with a camper shell.

^^^ nope. You can't leave a can of gas in a SUV for any length of time and not get a headache while driving.
Hauling wet dogs is another reason a truck is better.
There is a long list of reasons a truck with a shell is the better vehicle for an outdoorsman.
Being a dentite is a whole different situation. A Dodge Caravan would probably suffice.

I mean I have a truck to get gas in and all the other things on your list. I am just talking about a hunting vehicle. What kind of outdoorsman has only one vehicle?

I have two "trucks." one is clean(er) and the other one smells like a wet dog slept in a cricket cage.

and who leaves a tank of gas in the back of their truck for days? silly wasteful people, that's who.
or people who put hot grease up on a shaky table.
    heathens.
Ugh. Stupid people piss me off.

I've got a retrax on my chevy. A little water tends to get in up at the front (closest to the cab), but it's nothing major. It takes up a little room of your bed, but nothing I can't deal with.

    "Trucks"?
So you have a Durango and a Caravan?

And bowhunters are definitely a weird bunch. Almost as bad as turkey hunters.

Any reason to have one of their dealers install it vs DIY?

I’m close to pulling the trigger.

Since we all love online reviews, here ya go. They are the most important!

Swapped up trucks to a Silverado crew short bed standard tailgate. Had the Retrax pro Xr installed a month ago.

Retrax warned me that they are not water tight or resistant. Lots of videos suggested they were pretty dang close except in really bad bad conditions.

For $2k I am a little disappointed. I’ve tried to go behind the installer with small adjustments and made a little progress with the water leaking in, but not great. It could be a GM issue because admittedly the bulk of the YouTube content was ford with with most glowing reviews.

It’s not a pile of junk, I just do not see the juice as worth the squeeze. They all have some type of issue whether it’s security, dryness, or being able to move them out the way at the last minute to load something unexpected.

    Happy New Year!

Haha you should start a review thread. Help us all out when the time arises to buy a new truck.

Ill agree. Camper shells are the best option for covered beds. I had one for 9 years on a Gen 1 Tundra. I have a cheap tri fold on my 16 tundra now just for trips. Fold it up and hang in the garage when not traveling. My buddy had a shell on a 2500 dodge with the leer locker that mounted on the underside of the roof. Drawers slid out and hinged down. That was a badass setup. Better than decked drawers IMO. You couldn’t really see the leer locker from the outside looking in and you could still hose out the bed without fear of leaking drawers. I think a boat winch with pulleys on the ceiling of a shop or garage would be the ticket for adding or removing the shell when needed. Hook it to the roof rack and winch it up or down.
