    Default Gun cleaning

What rust preventative do y'all use on your blued guns/rifles? I have tried the CLP, RemOil, Hoppe's, and a few more, but I still keep getting rust spots on my guns.

What copper remover do you use? I've always used Hoppe's, but I have been looking at the reviews on the Bore Tech?

For surface rust prevention I like using that bore butter type stuff you use with muzzleloaders.

Yeah, That's what I'm talking about, surface rust mainly on the barrels.

I'm going to try some of this. Hope it helps.

The link I posted above is to the Barricade. I think I'm going to try it.

Ballistol and RIG for rust prevention have worked well for me.

Move to Wisconsin where gun rust is common and celebrated.

I use nothing but WD-40 on the outside of my guns and usually on the insides too. All I do with shotguns is spray down the barrels with WD-40 then run a bore snake through.

I will occasionally run some Hoppes bore cleaner, powder solvent and copper solvent through my rifles and pistols.

Oh, back to your question - WD-40 on the outside has worked for me for 45 years but honestly compels me to say I do have a few matte spots that will run in rain and salt spray but they are where the bluing is worn off from my hands or where the barrels rub going in or coming out of the gun case.

I use G96. Mainly because it smells like bananas. Thus my wife doesn’t get quite as made when she walks in on me cleaning a gun at the kitchen table.

Not sure if they still make it, but i put RIG on my guns with a sheepskin rag when they are going in the safe and not coming out for a while. But it goes a long way so I haven’t bought any in at least 15 years or more.

I've got to get a handle on this myself. My safe has a humidity issue... and the PEET safe dehumidifier I put in there isn't cutting it. I actually found mildew on my wood stocks... it wipes off, but surface rust is becoming an issue as well.

I’m glad to hear you say that. That’s all I’ve ever used but figured I’d get scolded if I mentioned it here.

3n1 oil. It's about $2 at any hardware store. All I've ever used.

Biggest thing that causes surface rust is not wiping down your gun after using it. Moisture from the environment and oil and sweat from your skin always get on the gun. It doesn’t have to be raining for moisture to get on your gun. You can use any oil on earth and it will work as long as you consistently use it

Correct. I do not wipe them down every time that I use them. Maybe I'm just asking too much from these products.

That is why you wax. Look up the product I posted and what it was developed for.
