    Thanks for all the help

Actually had one of our members stop by my office and he had made me some bee traps

So explain to me exactly how this works? Does the bee not just come out the way they came in or is there something preventing them from leaving the jar?

Bee goes up the 1/2" hole drilled at a 45 degree upward angle then turns to exit the lighted hole at the bottom of the wood and is caught in the jar. They'll pile up in the jar and die. I guess they don't know how to get out. Works like a champ too.

I have some of those where my tractor is stored and they stay full of bees. They work very well.

I could sell the heck out of those here. These Yankees would buy them for $25.00 or more a trap.
Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

As willyworm explained in the original thread, these bees are basically lazy in that they’ll try to use an old hole to nest in before drilling a new one. When they see the holes in the wood block they follow the tunnel upwards and then down towards the light and down into the jar. I have no idea why they won’t retreat into the vertical hole they came in through, but it never happens. Note, in my experience, the traps work better when you prime them with a couple of 1/2 dead bees who end up fighting each other. Maybe other bees are drawn to the fights… ?

Thanks for your comments, tprice. It was a pleasure to meet you, also.

Is the lid still on the jar? How is it fastened to the wood block?

Yes, the lid is attached to the box, keep in mind mason jars do not have a full top. This is the part you put in the lid when you seal/can with them

If you use Mason jars, or similarly threaded ones, and Mason jar lids, you can either leave the center lid piece out, like tprice mentioned, or you just drill a 3/4” hole through it to match the vertical 3/4” hole you drill to meet the angled 1/2” holes you drill up into the sides.

Yes, the lid, or lid rim as the case may be, is either nailed or screwed to the bottom of the block (with the holes lined up).

Woodie cant catch a break around here.

Seriously though, good on you for the gesture. Those things are pretty cool. I'm gonna make one and see what happens.

Do yall catch bees year round or just right now when they seem to be more active?

I start catching them as soon as they show up sometime in March. It tapers off quickly, at least it has this year, and I'm only catching a few while others are chewing holes in the shed rafters and the unpainted bottom 2x4's on the various railings.

Note - the traps always seem to work better for me if I 'half kill' a couple of bees and stick them in the jars as bait because they fight each other for a day or so and draw others in.

What's odd, is that the price has dropped to $7-$12 on FB Marketplace and the NextDoor app. Not sure what they're selling them for at ACE Hardware. I forgot to check when I was picking up some PVC couplings the other day.

When I get some time I'll make some out of some old cedar fence posts and dead cedar/juniper tree trunks I've been collecting. They ought to bring a pretty penny with some of the 'damn Yanks' who have been moving into the area recently.

I have had 2 of those hanging from my back arbor for at least 2 years and have yet to catch a single bee. They are still boring holes, so they get old school treatment.
