    Default Use Enough Gun

I stumbled across a 7mag AND 300 WinMag in the Tikka T3 model I like so much. The T3 is a good light rifle. Ideal for toting in elevated places for lots of days and distance, also the stainless barrel and composite stock makes me think it's pretty hardy in harsh environs.

I've got caribou and elks on the horizon.

I dont plan on hunting dangerous game with it, and already own a .270 which will kill an elk and that bullet can stretch it's legs. Is it enough for a Caribou? I was thinking 30.06 but...also want to keep my ammo parameters in a narrow scope.

30-06 with do anything. 300 win mag will do anything a lot farther away.

A .270 in the lungs will wreck an elk and caribou's day.

A caribou is a smaller framed animal than an elk, is it not?

Of course the .270 will work, but this is a great reason to buy a new gun...

If you're set on picking those two calibers, I'd go 7 mag all day.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn't go so far as to call a dog filthy but they're definitely dirty. But, a dog's got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Well, I went to buy the .300 and I'll be damned if they didnt have that .308 T3 I've been looking for for a year and a half. So...I bought that one. Now I have two .308's. Now, I'll start scope shopping, I reckon.

    That's always a good problem.

I guess buying guns for us is like women buying shoes.

300 win is the standard for all North American animals except Grizz/Brown Bear.

7MM will soup either elk or caribou. Caribou are not all that tough.

However a 270 is a tad light for both in my opinion. 130 ttsx will hold good weight retention and well placed will kill anything, but no margin.

I'm a 7mm Mag fan. I have been buying Wyoming points and would get a light 7mm Mag if I went for elk. A 300 Mag is fine as well, but if I was going to dual purpose the rifle for speed goats or mulies, the 7 seemed a better option. I have one now, but it's just a tad heavy.

    Solid life advice right there
Seeing these soulless vanilla ice lookin Yankees on a bassboat is worse than watching a woman get her implants taken out. It's just wrong. Get back in your Lund and go back to infisherman.

There's a small town north of Fairbanks, AK named North Pole. The whole town is Christmas themed. There is a roadside tourist trap/petting zoo that has a bunch of "reindeer" (caribou) that you can see up close. I was surprised at their size. They are much smaller than the impression I had from seeing them on TV. They are closer to the size of a deer than the size of an elk. I don't know if they are particularly tougher though. Their thick coat and hide might make them harder to kill than a southern whitetail but I don't think I'd buy a new magnum just to drop one. (Although I might tell my wife I needed a specific new gun for them).

Many elk have been taken with a 257 roberts. 270 is plenty with a good bullet. Shot placement can trump big bore displacement. A good shot with a 270 is better than a poor shot with gun 300rem ultra mag.

I’ve never been near an elk but the folks I’ve talked to who live out west assure me that if I were to bring a 30-06 it will be more than sufficient.

Hard to go wrong with a 7 mag. A lightweight 300WM sounds miserable for taking a shot while suffering from a case of the elk shakes.

    I’d compromise with a .280 Remington.
