I hauled my son to Argentina with me on a trip I had scheduled for 2020 to hunt red stag. I killed my stag on the first day. Not big at all, just a medium sized one with a lot of points (14). Fun hunt, son was there for it, good stalk, good shot, good hunt.
My son has been on plenty of hunts, but never been behind the trigger. I asked if he wanted to try for a black buck or fallow, and he said ‘yes’. We set off on the afternoon of day 2. It was a bad swirling wind, and we wanted to get within 75 yards. At last light we got within range of a fallow, he watched it from the scope on a tripod, but backed off. Wasn’t sure if he was nervous, scared, or not confident in the shot. Being honest, I was a little disappointed but at the same time proud he backed off when he wasn’t ready. Day 3 I didn’t know what to expect. We hung out in the morning and around noon he decided he wants to try again. Got busted 3 or 4 times due to wind again. Finally we found a fallow on a field edge with good wind about 400 yards away. We snuck the tree line in and after around 30 minutes of creeping we got within 70ish yards. He’s either a natural or a sociopath, because his breathing never got excited and he never shook. First shot was perfect right behind the shoulder, animal started to run and his second shot missed high, third shot put him down at 140 yards with the animal running away from him. I put one into it when we walked up to finish it off a little quicker. He was pumped up, surprised I got him to sleep last night. Shot with a .223 HK.
