I haven’t hunted much this year. My boy is growing up. He’s in school working a job, and will drop anything and everything if it involves women. Thus, his time is limited and I’m last on the list.
Also I lost both my dogs in less than a year. One to a gator the other to a car. My daughter isn’t into as much as the boy…plus we’ve had no birds to really hunt. Christmas break was hot. Then Covid went through the house, knocking me out for a week then getting the wife. Just no fire in my belly to go.
I got her excited over youth day it being a day set aside for kids and all. I even promised her she could take “her” dog. Her dog is an 8 year old rescued Drahthaar who was never hunted. Like I said she was all in and excited. I anticipated disaster, but it was just a sublime and delightful day that’s going to cost me a lot of money I’m happy to spend. I don’t think she will be after it as hard as her brother but she’s competitive enough to go enough to keep me happy. The first thing she did when we got home was take her duck to compare it to her brother's first. Yes, it was bigger and we're going to get it mounted. I might even consider getting a puppy in the spring.
Anyway, enough about me. This was her day…and her first bird. No waders, and a pump. She got cold feet, and she shed a couple of tears when she didn’t put the gun on her shoulder right. We tried wing shooting first but quickly moved to a water swat to seal the deal. “Her” dog even “retrieved” her duck. I’m a proud dad. Will be looking for a gas auto loader for next season.
