    Default Project Jeep

I really wanted a 80's Toyota FJ but gave up trying to find a decent one that wasn't crazy expensive. I found this old jeep and went back and forth about it for a week or so. Finally said screw it and got it.

    1979 Cherokee Chief

Has a fairly straight body with some rust spots on the fenders. Floor pans are good and the interior is amazingly original. It's cool to see the amount of metal used instead of plastic.

    I'll update as I go.

It's got the 4.2L 258 in it, which moved it pretty good until both front tires blew.

Story from the seller was he got it from a neighbor whose husband used it as a shop truck. Sat under a carport for years after his death until she sold it to him. He claims it has 61k original miles.

PS. Anyone have some 15" tires laying around?

That's the one he has got with the 360 in it. No rust and never been wrecked. I might call him NOW

You don't need a lift . You just swap the axle to the bottom of the springs and you get roughly 6 inch lift.

Mr. Huntinjunkie sent me a message about some old 33" swampers he would donate to the project to get her rolling, so I took a trip up to Kershaw, SC. I saw the goldmine on my way and holy smokes what an operation. I sure hope they have a good reclamation plan. Anyhow, I finally got the tires on the rims by hand which was a total body workout.

I think the stance looks good but I'm not sure if new 33"s will rub at full flex. This is the wide track version and I've read differing opinions on it.

Pulled up the carpet and discovered the passenger side floor pan was thin as paper. Went ahead and cut it all out.

Going to weld in a new floor then treat and encapsulate.

From above "I saw the goldmine on my way and holy smokes what an operation. I sure hope they have a good reclamation plan."

The reclamation plan is the Wateree Heritage Preserve WMA in Richland County along the Wateree. A part of it is a former rice plantation as I recall. Pretty sure cotton was there too. They are trying to restore a fair amount of it. 90 acres of food plots on about 3800 acres of land. Duck impoundments too.

Did that vehicle have an offset rear diff? Seems there was something odd about them. I had one briefly until a fella convince me that he wanted it more.
