Speaking all of this firewood and cresote talk, does anyone know of a good chimney sweep? I need to get mine cleaned, hasn't been cleaned since we bought our house in 16'. No clue if previous owners ever had if swept out

I use the top hat guy.

    He's expensive, but worth it.

    I haven't seen another one.

Weird cat. Nice as he can be.

I've never seen someone take a simple Jon so seriously.

I started calling him annually for peace of mind. Worth every penny.

    Can I do it? Yep.

Will I put it off in favor of shit I'd rather do? Yep.

So, he gets to make a living and I get to appreciate his service and do the shit I'd rather do.

I just used Curtis Logan, Camden Chimney Sweep.

    He’s good.

Won’t feed you a lot of bs about how your house is gonna burn down because it’s not built to current code(house but in 50’s). That’s been my experience with all the other “chimney Sweeps”.

Had one of our chimneys cleaned recently. Dude was like " call me in July or August and it's half price". Dammit.

My woman bout shit a meatloaf when she saw the bill. Her- " Well , at least you didn't get up on the roof and risk a fall" Me- "neither did he". He cleaned it from the bottom up. Guy didn't even have a ladder on his truck.. I burn some damn firewood too. Only thing I saw fall into the fireplace was three paper wasp nests and a minimal amount of soot. He shoved a rotorooter into the Flue and let it rip. I stuck my head in the fireplace and looked up with a Nebo flashlight and damn, it looked brand new.

Dude asked me if I wanted the fireplace in the great room cleaned while he was there. I'm like "Fuck no unless you do a two for the price of one" It took him less than an hour start to finish. We won't be using the other one. Period. No Tophat, nor tails.

Yopu would never burn my pecan wood in a fire place. That is for smoking and BBQ ONLY.

Funny how regional supply affects end use. During my recent trip to South TX , I was told to build a fire in the outdoor pit ( which was a giant one by my standards) The ranch had cords and cords of beautiful Mesquite ricked up. I told the guys I felt bad for using such fine smoker/ BBq wood for a campfire.

They laughed. It's pretty much all they have in that area. I bet we burnt $500 worth.

I feel the same about burning hickory in a fireplace.

If y'all are burning sweetgum I have all you want and will cut down as many as y'all can come and get. I'll even limb it and buck it for you.

While I generally agree, when wood is/was the only source of heat, smoked meats come second to staying warm. My father was old school and his supply of firewood was a necessity, as long as it wasn’t pine, it was firewood first and foremost.

    Dont overlook dogwood

I have lost about 6-7 in the last 12 years. all decent size. very dense and burns hot

cherry is my favorite. i use a buckstove so the "popping" doesnt bother me much at all. when i used to burn it in a open fireplace I kept a good screen up and a "fire proof" rug in front
