    Default New One for Me

Hit up a public hole sat morning that has been inaccessible this year due to the low river level. Was rewarded with a couple low flyovers by some passing woodies. Towards the end of the hunt I dropped one that didn’t die right away and he swam off behind tree where I didn’t have a clean up shot. It was a hair too deep to wade over and time to call it so I mozied back to the boat when I heard all manner of wings beating and ruckus from the general vicinity of where he swam. This guy had commenced to eating on my kill’s ass and had no interest in giving him up. He only left when I got in arms reach with the boat. And not very far at that. Nearest branch out of reach. I figured owl’s gotta eat too and left him my kill. Puddered a little ways off and watched for a few minutes and he came back down and went back to work. Never been been Debo’d by an owl before.

I had an owl take a wood duck two years ago, and looked like he had done it before. Thanks for sharing

Hawks as well. Saw a red tailed hawk kill a wood duck a few years ago.

Pretty cool! I was squirrel hunting Edisto WMA a few years ago and jumped up some wood ducks. Then I heard a weird commotion. Came up on the next waterhole and watched a hawk riding the back of a duck into the water. He stayed on top, eventually drowning the duck. Didn't realize they were smart enough to do that. After the duck was dead he dragged it out into the bushes and ate his breakfast.

I lose 20 birds a year to raptors. Primarily Baldies. The other red tailed hawks. I giggle. Good for them.
Never ever to an owl. That's way cool.

Saw that happen at the Dead River back in the 90’s. We have a pair of Bald Eagles that hang out on one of the club properties out west. There’s a tree that has become known as “The Eagle Tree” that sits on the levee dividing our field and the neighboring field. They eat well.

When I used to go west to hunt rice fields in LA, they patrol the levees pretty good. When we went out after the hunt concluded with the dog to check for cripples and such, found numerous ducks with the beast eaten out.

Delta in a nutshell: Breeding grounds + small wetlands + big blocks of grass cover + predator removal + nesting structures + enough money to do the job= plenty of ducks to keep everyone smiling!

Should’ve rolled him also would’ve made for a cool mount

“… duckhunting stands alone as an outdoor discipline. It has a tang and spirit shared by no other sport—a philosophy compounded of sleet, the winnow of unseen wings, and the reeks of marsh mud and wet wool. No other sport has so many theories, legends, casehardened disciples and treasured memories.”

    That's neat!

As a kid with a sweet pellet gun and golf cart I shot my first quail in a field by my house. I was pumped. I literally turned to set my gun on the cart and go retrieve my trophy, that I could already imagine being a great dinner. Then a Red tailed hawk soared out of the tree behind me and made a quick retrieve before I could even take a step toward my bird. I was crushed, and none of my friends believed my story.
