My seven year old son has been tagging along deer hunting and coon hunting with me on and off the past two seasons, but this season I could see the change. Instead of me asking him if he wanted to go, he was asking me to take him. At the beginning of this season he just wasn’t ready couldn’t properly hold the gun. So, he watched me shoot a handful of does and one pretty decent buck. Well fast forward to this week, he grew so quickly now he can freehand shoot his .410. We set up Monday morning and after a few swing and misses we settled on a water swat. Mallard drake dead.
Then Tuesday he wanted to deer hunt, we got in a blind I made him help build earlier this year in hopes he could shoot one out of it. I couldn’t have drawn it up any better. Four does came out around 200 yards away fed there for about 3 minutes then jogged directly at us and stopped and turned broadside at 75ish yards. I clicked the safety off asked if he was on her “yessir” I got the first three letters of the word shoot out before the gun went off. As we watched her run off I knew she was in bad shape. High fives were had now it’s time to wait.

While we were waiting I decided to drive into another spot we have and walk in and check over a hill where there are a couple of locust trees right up against a gulley. Well as luck would have it, we spotted a buck. Couldn’t tell exactly what he was due to low light so we backed out and came up with a plan for in the morning. Figured out what the wind was doing and set up a pop up blind accordingly and he helped cut and brush it in. We left and came back that afternoon after about an hour and a half a doe stepped out around 250 yards followed by a buck then doe after doe. After showing my boy the buck he wanted to try him at 200. It was everything I could do to get him calmed down and let the deer come on in. After some chaos in the blind the deer stopped at 120 yards and I clicked the safety off, this time I told him whenever you’re ready. Bang, flop, dead. I’ve never been so excited over a deer.
