I know a group out of Swainsboro, Ga that does it every year. They had “ red cane” this year. There is a science to it. Isn’t it something like 60 gallons of juice yield roughly 6 gallons of syrup?

That heavy bitch will flat out squeeze every ounce of juice out of a stick of cane. It's impressive.

Granddaddy lived south of Lake City FL. Whenever we went to visit we always left with two cases of syrup and 10 lbs of homemade smoked sausage. Damn good eating.

Wonder how it would do here in the upstate. I’ve got some open ground, about 1/2 acre, that could use a cover crop.

As a kid I always looked forward to going to this event. Used to be called the Syrup Sopping Festival. Gaggles of folks cooking cured hams, making homemade biscuits in wood stoves and watching the mule turn the cane press. They still have it but changed the name.

What's a cat head? Sure it's nothing like pulley bones, right?

I have an employee who's father grows and makes his own batch every year, for the last several years I've been returning glass bottles for my refills.. this year he had his own label made, and a cute bottle. I can run through a bottle pretty quick. I had to find a healthy balance.. if I start daydreaming about it, I'll run through a bojangles line to grab a bag of biscuits, and I can make my own hand patted biscuits.. it's just not fast enough.

What part of Ohio are you from? I kid. What are pulley bones? I prefer cane syrup on flap jacks or hoe cake.

My children will never know about making syrup, curing, pickling or hog killings.

It will do fine. If you want some seed let me know. We got enough to last for years

I read this at 9:20am and it made me curious how long it takes. I got up from the computer at 9:20 and pulled these out at 9:58.

it takes 12 minutes for mine to bake.. but I've got to get there first, so it might be forty five if I have everything. I don't keep bacon grease.. I cut in butter. If I want good ones, I'll have to stop by for buttermilk. I don't keep that in the house.

Yea, 12 minutes for me, too. I had just never thought about how long it was from start to finish, getting everything ready, making and baking. So about 45 minutes without rushing.
