LOL ... I don't have a ruling. I did mine years ago and was basing it on the prevailing Innernet data at the time. I just remember the ATF form having a place to enter the barrel length, overall length, and caliber. Wondering if mating an upper that changed any of that would raise an issue...

The way it was explained to me by my Trust attorney. You can send a letter to the ATF stating that the SBR "can be found in other calibers, ie 300blk" and they would put it on file.

I haven't ever fooled with it and not sure it even matters.

You have to put the specific length of the barrel and OAL on the form 1. Once it’s complete you can put whatever barrel you want on top of the registered lower, however you have to have the original upper stil around to put it back to form 1 configuration

Isn't there some type of transport out of state restriction on SBRs ?

You have to file a form. I used to do it for a peroid of 365 every year.

I believe it is that way for all NFA items.

It does not apply to Suppressors.

    Interesting...

It's been a while, but didn't it once apply to suppressors? Maybe something changes in the last ~18 years...?

I do not believe it ever applied to cans.

    Speaking of engraving....

If you do a Form 1 SBR, you have to get your info, as the manufacturer, engraved in the lower. This will be the name of the enity, your name or the name of your trust..etc, and City & State.

A benefit of going with one of my SBRs is that no engraving is required. East Lake Industries's info is already on the lower since we are the manufacturer of the lower and then the SBR. This saves you the expense and time of the engraving and unnecessary clutter on the receiver. Not to mention any refinishing needed to your anodizing or cerokate.

Not at this time. There maybe a laser in the future.

Several guys here have entered the SBR game with me. I can make this easy for you using my East Lake Industries lowers. My info, as the manufacturer, is already engraved. So you will not have to go though the expense and eye sore of additional engraving like you would have to if you went the Form 1 route. I have lowers in the raw that we can get Cerakoted any color you would like. Uppers to match as well.
If you have already done the suppressor deal with me, this will be the same process be easier this time.

Most NFA Firearms are NOT allowed to be moved across state lines without approval from the ATF beforehand. Silencers and Any Other Weapons (AOWs) are exempt from this, but all other NFA Firearms (SBRs, SBSs, Machine Guns, and Destructive) must not cross state lines without approval.

There is one exception to this rule:
If you have your FFL, this doesn’t apply!

    ATF’s Form 5320.20 Requirements
Before a Short Barreled Rifle (SBR), Short Barreled Shotgun (SBS), Machine Gun, or Destructive Device (DD) can be moved across state lines, an ATF Form 5320.20 Application to Transport Interstate or to Temporarily Export Certain National Firearms Act (NFA) Firearms must be submitted to the ATF.

It is important to note that this form must be submitted well in advance of whenever you intend to move any of the covered NFA Firearms because you aren’t allowed to move them until the form comes back from the ATF approved.

Two copies of the Form 5320.20 must be submitted to the ATF and, if approved, one of them will be returned will approval.

I have never filed one so I have no idea how quick they return or if they deny due to whatever.
